Huron County gets $50K grant

NORWALK — The Huron County commissioners are getting $50,000 from the state for a plan to preserve potential farmland while facilitating future economic development over the next 10 to 20 years. The Ohio Department of Agriculture awarded the grant to the county to update its 2017 comprehensive land use plan, a guide for how to utilize county land the best while weighing economic, social and environmental factors, according to the state agriculture department. "As the state continues to see growth in numerous industries, food and agriculture remains one of Ohio's top industries — contributing $124 billion to the economy each year," a release from the state agriculture department states. "This grant helps align farmland preservation with economic vitality, encourages collaboration between farmers and local governments, and supports efforts to preserve farmland." County's plan The Huron County commissioners submitted the county's proposal earlier this year in collaboration with the consultant firm Mannik Smith Group and the Ohio State University Extension. A copy of the county's proposal explains the project's purpose: Although total farmland acreage in Huron County has remained relatively stable over the past five years, according to USDA crop acreage data, significant long-term development trends and community evolution indicate that changes in the balance of land uses may be on the horizon. Rising land values, generational farm transitions, parcel fragmentation and speculative residential development are increasing conversion risk — particularly in unzoned or minimally planned townships. Without coordinated county-wide planning, incremental development decisions may lead to suboptimal distribution of land uses and the corresponding infrastructure challenges. The identification of prime agricultural soils, prospective transportation corridors and strategic development centers can only help shape the complex discussions and decision-making that are already occurring across Huron County. This plan will establish a verified baseline of total farmland acreage using USDA/(National Agricultural Statistics Service) data and (Geographic Information System) parcel analysis, quantify development pressure, distinguish zoned versus unzoned farmland acreage and identify high-priority preservation and development areas to proactively address land conversion over the next 10–20 years. The county budgeted a matching contribution of about $30,000 for the plan. There will be data collection, meetings and public engagement on the project set to take place over the course of 2026, which will be done in collaboration with partners including the Huron County Growth Partnership, Huron County Planning Commission and Huron County Soil & Water District. A final plan is set to be drafted and presented to the Huron County commissioners for their approval in early 2027.
