St. Paul wraps up outright FC title

NORWALK — The state-ranked St. Paul baseball team finished off its outright Firelands Conference championship with a 10-0 run-rule win over visiting Monroeville on Thursday at Contractors Park. Nate Griffin pitched five scoreless innings and scattered four hits for St. Paul (17-3, 12-2), the No. 3-ranked team in this week's Division VII state coaches poll. He struck out four and walked one. Izaac Snyder doubled and drove in two, while Gabe Snyder also had a double with an RBI. Casey Fries was 2 for 2 with an RBI, while Landon Fries and River Couch each singled with an RBI, with Alex Marsh adding two RBIs. Ethan Smiley, Owen Patchen, Reid Wasserman, and Alex Dowell each had singles for the Eagles (13-8, 7-6). St. Paul is slated to host Lucas on Friday before visiting Huron on Tuesday ahead of its home sectional title game vs. Old Fort on May 21. This season marked the fifth FC title for the Flyers in the past nine seasons. The Flyers have also averaged 18 wins per season since 2015, and are one win away from that figure again this spring. Cooper Roe went all seven innings on the mound for Western. He allowed one earned run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. At the plate, he was 2 for 2 with a double and drove in two runs. Also for Western, Austin Kolb was 2 for 4, and Caleb Pausch singled with an RBI. Hermes took the loss on the mound. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. Edison has another non-league test on Friday as it hosts Div. Henry Thomas pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and allowed one hit with three strikeouts and no walks. New London heads to Crestview on May 23 for a Div. VI sectional title game.
