Titanic exhibit docks in Cleveland

More than a century after the RMS Titanic slipped beneath the North Atlantic, people can step aboard the ill-fated ocean liner through a mix of recovered artifacts and cutting-edge virtual reality. "TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition" opens May 21 at the Great Lakes Science Center, 601 Erieside Ave. in Cleveland, marking the largest version of the exhibit the venue has ever hosted. The showcase pairs about 200 physical artifacts with two massive, U.S.-debut virtual experiences. While the digital additions offer sweeping views of the ship's opulence, the physical items ground the tragedy in its human element. Among the recovered items on display are deeply personal belongings, such as a remarkably intact postcard that was originally addressed to a Cleveland resident, and a small blue shoe figurine. "Someone said, 'You know what? This figurine's coming with me on the Titanic,'" said William Katzman, the center's vice president of exhibits. "It's just one of those things that you start to wonder, how does this get there? ... I think that those help to take the context of the artifacts, and put it in a more human perspective." For the first time in the United States, visitors can take a guided VR tour through 360-degree recreations of the ship's boiler rooms, Turkish baths and gymnasium, ending at the lifeboats during the ship's final moments. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater is hosting "Voices of the Titanic," a visual journey where professional voice actors narrate actual passenger accounts. It is the first time the program has been formatted for a domed screen. "Hearing those voices really connects you to the people who set sail on Titanic," said Amanda Taunt, vice president of operations. Beyond the sights and sounds, visitors will experience the bitter reality of the April 1912 sinking by touching a "living iceberg" — a massive, freshwater cooling plate that illustrates the freezing conditions that ultimately claimed the majority of the victims' lives. Katzman noted that the exhibition's arrival perfectly aligns with the city's current waterfront redevelopment efforts and the upcoming commissioning of the USS Cleveland, tapping directly into the region's maritime identity. Ultimately, he views the exhibition not just as a memorial to a tragedy, but as a lesson in science and endurance, pointing to the 73-year engineering effort required to finally locate the wreckage. "'Titanic' is a testament to human exploration," Katzman said. "It's a tribute to humanity's resilience and STEM." The exhibition runs through Jan. 18, 2027.
