South Central, Western advance to district semis

GREENWICH — The South Central softball team advanced to a Division VI district semifinal with Tuesday's 11-1 win in six innings over Bucyrus in a sectional title game. The Trojans (6-12) will face Bucyrus Wynford (9-11) at 5:30 p.m. on May 19 at Shelby High School. Margaretta (16-5) faces Lakota (10-9) in the other half of the district bracket on the same day in Clyde. In Tuesday's win, Zaida Myers and Ember Phillips each finished 3 for 3 with two doubles and drove in two runs out of the first two spots in the batting lineup. Viola Culler was also 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Claire Howell and Mayson Middaugh each singled with an RBI. Culler allowed one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks over six innings in the circle. The Trojans will host Plymouth on Wednesday and Mapleton on Friday in a pair of Firelands Conference games around a non-league visit to Perkins on Thursday. Bucyrus 010 000 — 1 2 2 S. After an 0-8 start, Western Reserve improved to 7-11 with the win. It will face Woodmore (9-14) in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. on May 19 at Clyde. The other half of the bracket is Hicksville (14-6) against Patrick Henry (16-6) in Archbold. In Tuesday's win, Layken Barnhart went the distance in the circle and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits. She struck out four and walked one bater. Maylee Wetzel doubled with two RBIs for Western, while Makayla Case was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Lilli Jarrett also doubled and scored, while Eliza Stewart singled and scored. She allowed four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Ella Kalizewski added her ninth home run — a three-run shot — of the season for St. Paul, while Ryleigh Mansfield-Bush was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a triple while scoring on both home runs. Payton Preston added three hits, and Addy Rospert had a base hit and an RBI. For New London (8-13, 4-8), Pailee Wilson, Chloe Cooke, Sydnee Hunington, and Emmersyn Risner each singled.
