Norwalk rallies for seventh straight win

TIFFIN — Though its conference title hopes came up a run short, the Norwalk softball team kept its win streak alive on Monday. The Truckers rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the fifth inning to beat host Tiffin Columbian by an 8-5 score on Monday. Norwalk (12-9, 8-2) has won eight straight games entering Thursday's Division III sectional title game at Lexington. Clyde (13-8, 9-1) clinched the SBC Lake Division title outright with a win at Sandusky on Monday. The Truckers and Fliers split during the regular season, but Norwalk lost 5-4 at Perkins on April 17. Since the loss to the Pirates, the Truckers are 9-1 in their last 10 games. In Monday's win, Saige Viock hit a game-tying three-run home run in the top of the fifth and earned the pitching win in relief of Sophia Ames. She went 3 2/3 innings and allowed an unearned run on no hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Also for Norwalk, Audryn Ott was 3 for 4 and scored twice, while Lola Schlotterer and Maddie Gamble each singled with an RBI. Caymen Mercer added a double and scored three runs. Zoey Rhodes was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Lilli Jarrett was 3 for 4 and scored twice for Western. Mackenzy Cook added two hits and an RBI, while McKenna Malson and Tenley Malson each had a hit with two RBIs. Layken Barnhart went all seven innings for the pitching win. She allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks. For Plymouth (2-19, 0-12), Presley Martin was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Kristi Yeager and Makayla Bowman each added two hits. Madison Montgomery singled with an RBI. Plymouth 300 000 1 — 4 9 3 W. Mallorie Sowers and Ryleigh Mansfield-Bush each finished with two hits and an RBI, while Payton Preston had two hits, and Kegney Stoll singled with an RBI. Taegan Mansfield-Bush added two RBIs, and Bella Guerra pitched five scoreless innings in the circle. She allowed three hits with two strikeouts and no walks. For New London (8-12, 4-7), Chloe Cooke was 2 for 2 with a double, and Sydnee Huntington singled. The teams rematch Tuesday at New London. N. Mapleton, which already has a share of the league title, finished at No. 8 in the Division VI state coaches poll. Payton Weilnau allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits to earn the win for the Eagles (14-6, 9-3). She struck out 14 with two walks. At the plate, Weilnau was 2 for 2 with a solo home run and scored three times. Genna Bragg was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Brooke Morman was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Madi Reiber also singled with an RBI. The teams meet again on Tuesday at Mapleton. Makenzie Ames added two hits and two RBIs, and Emma Steinmetz singled with an RBI. Ava Deel was charged with four earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and six walks over seven innings for the win. Willard is at Elmwood on Wednesday in a Div. V sectional tournament game before hosting Vermilion on Thursday and visiting Vanlue on Saturday.
