Crestview sweeps Eagles and Flyers

MONROEVILLE — Visiting Crestview posted a pair of 5-0 victories over host Monroeville and St. Paul on Saturday in a pair of rescheduled Firelands Conference softball games. With the first win on Saturday at Monroeville (13-6, 8-3), the Cougars (10-8, 9-3) allowed state-ranked Mapleton (19-1, 11-0) to clinch at least a share of the FC championship. The Mounties — ranked No. 7 in the Division VI state coaches poll — can clinch the title outright on Monday against the Eagles at Clark Park. Monroeville was limited to three hits in Saturday's loss. Madi Reiber and Genna Bragg each doubled, and Taylor Scheid added a single. The Cougars scored all five runs in the top of the first. Payton Weilnau came on in relief of Scheid and struck out 13 with no walks while allowing just three hits over 6 2/3 innings. Addy Rospert had two singles for St. Paul (12-9, 7-5 FC). Raylynn LaValley and Mallorie Sowers each had a double. Taegan Mansfield-Bush went all seven innings in the circle for the Flyers. She allowed the five runs (four earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk. St. Paul hosts New London (8-11, 4-6) on Monday and visits the Wildcats on Tuesday.
