Western routs SJCC for road win

FREMONT — The Western Reserve baseball team scored 17 runs on 13 hits in Thursday's 17-6 rout over host Fremont St. Joseph in five innings in non-league play. Western (7-7) trailed 4-3 after one inning but scored four runs in the second and eight in the fifth. Landyn Wiegel was 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles and five RBIs for the Roughriders, while Blake Welch was 2 for 4 with a home run and also drove in five. Caleb Pausch was 3 for 4 and scored four times, and Hayden Dobias was 2 for 4 with a double and drove in a pair. Also for Western, Austin Kolb doubled and drove in two, and Hunter Miller and Gavin Trzil each had base hits and drove in a run. Lincoln Distl singled with two RBI for Plymouth, while Jarrett Burrer and Evan King each singled with an RBI. Desean Winfield also doubled and scored, and Lucas Distl had two hits and scored a run. Lex Grose pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win. He allowed three runs (one earned) on one hit with seven strikeouts. Weaver allowed just two hits and finished with eight strikeouts and four walks over seven innings. At the plate for Willard, Dalton Reed singled twice and scored three of the five runs. Jandyel Salazar and Roger Whetstone each doubled with an RBI, and Josh Huston singled with an RBI. Willard is scheduled to host St. Paul in a non-league game on Friday. Bellevue's Preston Spurlock won at third singles over Jacob Burger (2-6, 6-4, 10-5). At first doubles, the team of Edward Ramos Cruz and Jack Pittenger defeated Austin Eisenhauer and Lucas Niedermier (6-1, 6-2). Levi Dickerson and Carter Swick won at second doubles over Sam Kinney and Konnor Smith (7-5, 6-0).
