Weilnau leads Eagles past St. Paul

MONROEVILLE — The Monroeville softball team got a strong performance on the mound from Payton Weilnau in an 8-2 win over host St. Paul in a Firelands Conference game Thursday at Contractors Park. The Eagles (13-5, 8-2) and Flyers (12-8, 7-4) could meet for a third time in a Division VII district semifinal on May 20 at Buckeye Central if both teams win their respective sectional title games on May 15. In Tuesday's win, Weilnau struck out 18 of the 21 outs she recorded in the complete-game effort over seven innings. She walked one and allowed a pair of unearned runs on two hits. At the plate, Genna Bragg had a double and drove in three for the Eagles. Ava Wadsworth was 2 for 4 and drove in two, while Brooke Moran singled and had two RBIs, and Lilly Clark was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Madi Reiber was also 2 for 4 with a double and scored twice. For St. Paul, Ella Kalizewski doubled, and Taegan Mansfield-Bush had an RBI single in the defeat. Both teams will host Crestview (8-7, 7-3) on Saturday in a pair of rescheduled FC games. The Cougars visit Monroeville at 10 a.m., then will head to Norwalk for a 1 p.m. game with the Flyers. Margaretta (14-4, 7-1) led 4-0 after two innings before the Flashes pulled within 4-3 after the top of the fourth inning. In the loss, Ava Deel was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. She allowed six earned runs on 11 hits with a strikeout in six innings in the circle. Kenley Bond added a single and drove in two for Willard, which visits Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic on Friday in a non-league game.
