St. Paul takes two-game FC lead

OLIVESBURG — The state-ranked St. Paul baseball team took a two-game lead with four to play in the Firelands Conference with Monday's 10-4 win over host Crestview. Trailing 2-0, the Flyers — ranked No. 6 in this week's Division VII state coaches poll — scored five times in the top of the third to take control. St. Paul (14-2, 9-1) leads the Cougars (9-5, 6-3) and South Central (7-7, 7-3) by two games. "Great way to start the week," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "Our offense was able to feed off of our defense after a slow start." Landon Fries made a stellar play at shortstop for the third out of the second inning with the Flyers already trailing 2-0. The play prevented two more runs, then St. Paul scored five runs in the third. "Izaac (Snyder) Immediately homered after that, and it just changed all the momentum," Coach Fries said. "We were able to keep adding on from there." Izaac Snyder was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Alex Marsh was 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Gabe Snyder was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while River Couch was 2 for 3 and drove in two. Marsh went 6 1/3 innings for the win. Greyson Fisher finished 2 for 4 and drove in three, while Alex Hamons doubled and drove in a pair for South Central. Troy Ayers also singled with two RBIs, and Wes June added two hits. Parker Layne pitched four innings for the win. He allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. S. Jake Fries led the way with four hits, including a double, while driving in two. Reid Wasserman was 3 for 5 with three RBIs for the Eagles, and Erickson Pisano was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Link Schaffer-Paull added two hits, including a double, and three RBIs, and Owen Patchen was 2 for 2 with a home run and drove in three. Ethan Smiley allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks to earn the win. Norwalk got the win at first singles, as Jeremiah McCreary defeated Jaxson Hall (7-6 (0), 6-0). Willard claims the next two spots, as Phebe Schag defeated Carter Swick (6-4, 6-1), and Lucas Winans bested Jacob Burger (6-4, 6-0). At first doubles, Willard clinched the match as Levi Schag and Mason Dawson beat Edward Ramos Cruz and Roman Snyder (6-0, 6-2). The Truckers won at second doubles, as Levi Dickerson and Jack Pittenger beat Gavin Warner and Owen Shepherd (6-1, 6-0). SMCC 4, Edison 1 SANDUSKY — The Panthers won all but second doubles against the Chargers in Monday's SBC Bay Division match. Jace Pinkston and Kaden Mees beat SMCC's Luke Evans and Jack Davis (7-6 (2), 6-3) for Edison. At first singles, Pravir Gorty edged Edison's Adin Colbert, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6. Eian Etchill beat Edison's Mary Moon, and Carter Snyder won over Kevin Ruby at second and third singles with identical sweeps (6-0, 6-0). The first doubles team of Luke Spicer and Pavan Gorty then beat Edison's Wade Ruggles and Kellyn Ritchie (6-2, 6-2).
