Norwalk holds off TC for third straight

NORWALK — The Norwalk softball team held off Tiffin Columbian for its third straight victory and a fourth in its last five games with Tuesday's 7-6 win in SBC Lake Division play at NHS. The Truckers (7-9, 3-2) led 4-0 after three innings and 7-2 through six, but the Tornados made it interesting with a four-run top of the seventh. Maddie Gamble was 3 for 4 out of the leadoff spot for Norwalk. Lola Schlotterer was 2 for 3 with a double and drove in two runs, while Audryn Ott was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Scarlet Schneider also doubled with an RBI, and Reagan Mooney singled with an RBI. In the circle, Sophia Ames allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits to earn the win. She struck out seven and walked one over seven innings. Norwalk is scheduled to visit Clyde on Wednesday. The Truckers are slated to pick up a game they trail 3-2 in the top of the fifth against Bellevue on Thursday before heading to Columbian on Friday. Madi Reiber again paced the Eagles, as she was 3 for 5 with a triple and drove in two from the leadoff spot. Taylor Scheid was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, while Brooke Morman doubled and drove in two, and Payton Weilnau added two hits. Scheid went the first three innings for the win. She allowed two earned runs on three hits. Weilnau went the final three scoreless innings and allowed three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. For St. Paul (11-7, 6-3), Ella Kalizewski homered in her first at-bat after her state record 14-RBI game on April 24 at Plymouth that saw her hit three home runs (two grand slams). She added a single, was intentionally walked twice, and has reached base in 12 consecutive plate appearances. Also for the Flyers, Addy Rospert doubled with an RBI. The two teams are scheduled to meet Wednesday in Norwalk. Olivia Yetter finished 3 for 4 with an RBI for New London (8-10, 4-5). Addison Yetter was 2 for 4 with a double and drove in two, while Gracie Thomas and Pailee Wilson each had two hits, with Wilson driving in a run. Natalie Weaver also doubled with an RBI for the 'Cats, while Addison Yetter earned the pitching win. She allowed five earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Makenzie Sykes singled and drove in two for Willard (8-8, 2-4), while Emma Steinmetz, Ava Deel, and Brinn Trimner each singled with an RBI. Deel earned the win in the circle, as she allowed four earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. Willard is at Edison on Friday for another league game. P. The Flyer girls were sixth among eight teams, and the boys were seventh. The 4x400-meter girls relay of Frances Donnelly, Aubrie Bogard, Amelia Stoll, and Deanna Vazquez placed third in 4:24.2. The 4x200 team of the same four runners placed fourth in 1:53.4. For the St. Paul boys, Adam Dowdell was third in the 800 (2:07.3). Hudson Davis placed fourth in the high jump (5 feet 2 inches) and fifth in the long jump (17 feet 1.5 inches), while Cam Coetzee was also fifth in the shot put (40 feet, 0.75 inches).
