St. Paul baseball stays alone in first

MONROEVILLE — The state-ranked St. Paul baseball team kept its spot atop the Firelands Conference with Tuesday's 8-4 win over host Monroeville at Clark Park. The Flyers — ranked No. 7 in the latest Division VII state coaches poll — improved to 13-2 overall and 8-1 in the FC. They lead Crestview (8-4, 6-2) by one game ahead of Wednesday's scheduled rematch with the Eagles (8-6, 4-5) in Norwalk. In Tuesday's win, Brady Fritz hit a pair of home runs and drove in three for the Flyers. Izaac Snyder, Gabe Snyder, Landon Fries, Isaac Kalizewski, and Casey Fries each finished with a base hit and an RBI. Izaac Snyder started and went the first 3 2/3 innings for the win. He allows four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Nate Griffin went the final 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed three hits with a strikeout and two walks. "This was a nice win to start the week," St. Paul coach Aaron Fries said. "Monroeville is a good team with a lot of talent, and we had to be sharp in all phases to get the win, and I thought we were. "I was really happy with our hitting. We were stinging the ball, and they made some nice plays to keep them within reach." Alex Dowell was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for Monroeville. Ethan Smiley and Cooper Cleary each added two hits, while Reid Wasserman singled with an RBI, and Hudson Bauer doubled and scored. Smiley started and allowed five earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and five walks over six innings. June scattered three hits and struck out eight with one walk in his complete-game shutout effort of seven innings. At the plate, he was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and drove in two. Also for South Central, Kayden Blair singled and drove in two, while Michael Sanders doubled with an RBI. Cole Frankart, Bryan Chaffee, and Greyson Fisher each had two hits, including a double for Fisher. New London (6-9, 2-7) got a double from Henry Thomas in the loss. Willard got wins at first singles and doubles. Levi Schag defeated Kai Weit (6-0, 6-3), while the team of Mason Dawson and Jaxson Hall topped Evan Lovitt and Zach Speer (6-2, 6-0). At second singles, Phebe Schag lost to Charley Kruse (6-5, 6-0), while Owen Shepherd fell to Payton Wadsworth at third singles (6-1, 6-0). The No. 2 doubles team of Gavin Warner and Lucas Winans lost to Aero Wymer and Alex DeFreitas (6-4, 6-2).
