NORWALK — Kepler, Norwalk Schools' four-legged ambassador, has a new assignment — winning votes. In a social media post from Norwalk Schools, Kepler made his pitch in his own voice, inviting the community to rally behind him in an online contest hosted by The Ability Center. The lighthearted message, paired with a series of photos including a puppy throwback, struck exactly the tone you would expect from a dog whose job is equal parts comfort, connection and school spirit. "Can you believe there is a contest that I could win?" according to the dog's post. "I am so excited my tail is wagging! Make sure you vote for me." The contest, sponsored by The Ability Center, is open to working dogs that "make a difference in their communities." For Kepler, that work happens every day, where he serves as a calming presence for students and staff alike. Facility dogs are trained to support emotional well-being, help students regulate stress and provide a steady, friendly presence in classrooms and hallways, according to Cheryl Englehart, a Norwalk school counselor. Englehart is also the primary handler for Kepler, who lives with her when he is not at school. "Kepler is not a therapy or service dog; he is the cream of the crop," she said. "Trainers choose which animals become certified school facility dogs, and then they choose potential service dogs from the group that don't make the cut." The call to action is simple. Supporters can visit the contest page and cast a vote, along with a comment explaining why Kepler deserves recognition. For now, Kepler is focused on the campaign trail, or at least as focused as a dog can be while also doing his regular job.
