Norris' record-breaking day leads Norwalk

Norwalk junior Grace Norris had an impressive performance at the rainy and windy Edison Invitational on Saturday. The state qualifier from last season set two meet records in the 200-meter dash (25.88) and the 400 (57.3) and finished her day anchoring the 4x400 relay to a win as well. The 400 time is also a new program record, and Norris was also named the meet MVP. In the team standings, Huron topped Norwalk for first place by a 134.5 to 92.5 margin in the girls meet and 111.5 to 80 on the boys side. For Norris it has been a pleasant surprise how well her season has gone so far. "I think for this part of the season it has been really good so far," Norris said. "It is a blessing to be able to run this fast at this part of the season. I feel like I could have pushed a little bit more at the end, but I am happy with my results." In the 400, Norris' time of 57.3 seconds broke a 20-year-old record of 59.12, previously held by Western Reserve's Stephanie Tinney. In addition, her time of 25.88 in the 200 broke a 48-year-old record set by Monroeville's Annette Moore (26.2). On top of Norris' two school records, Norwalk broke a third girls meet record in the 800 run as Xavi Immel scorched the track with a time of 2:17.4. That broke Huron's Jadyn Towns meet record set just two years ago in 2:19.6. "These kids have worked so hard this season," Norwalk head coach Phil Oglesby said. "We are hoping we can keep everyone healthy because there have been a lot of special performances so far this season." Norwalk added a record on the boys side of the meet with Elliot Gahring winning the 400 in 48.96 seconds. That mark had stood since 2008, when St. Mary Central Catholic's Dylan Keller won in 49.1 seconds. Gahring was also second in the 100 dash in 11.33 seconds and the 200 (22.41). Also for the Truckers, the 4x800 relay of Immel, Allison Konik, Peyson Bigler, and Saige Konik took first in 10:27.4. Joining Norris on the 4x400 relay that won in 4:10.2 were Immel, Olivia Ysaguirre, and Adyson Lepley. Lepley won the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, and teammate Libby Lark won the shot put (34 feet 7). Noah Jameson won the long jump with an effort of 19 feet. Konik was second in the 3200 in 12:34.68, and Kinleigh Lesch was third in the discus for the Truckers (101 feet 0.5). Dylan Eggleston tied for second in the 110 hurdles (16.61) and also placed second in the 300 hurdles (42.47). Jason Cruz Segovia was second in the 3200 in 11:24.08, while Jake Bissell was third in the 400 (52.96). The 4x800 relay of Clay Heyman, Alex Christophel, Isaiah Kelsey, and William Biller placed third in 8:54.71, as did the 4x400 team of Bissell, Biller, Heyman, and Derione Johnson in 3:38.08. Another returning state qualifier — and placer — had a strong showing at the meet. Western Reserve senior Hayden Keith won the shot put (55 feet 2) and was second in the discus throw (163-11.5). Keith was nine feet ahead of the second-place finisher in the shot put. Also for Western, Chase Hipp was second in the high jump (5 feet 10). Lucas Summerfield in the 300 hurdles (45.73), Peyton Kerby in the long jump (18 feet 5), and Travis French in the shot put (44 feet 3.5) each placed fourth for the Roughriders. For the Western girls, Audree Jackson was second in the high jump and teammate Aubree Zunis was third. They both cleared 4 feet 8. Frankie Hoover was fourth in the long jump (14 feet 9.5), and Imani Bizzell was fourth in the shot put (31 feet 4). The 4x100 relay of Korissa Fraelich, Jackson, Zunis, and Madalynn Loyer also placed fourth in 55 seconds. Edison's 4x800 relay of Kellen McDonnell, Mason Leber, William Corfman, and Trey Hines won the event in 8:37.09. Also for the Chargers, Colin Butler was third in the 300 hurdles (44.5) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.78). He and Hines teamed with Trenten Williams and Austin Mankin to place fourth in the 4x200 relay in 1:36.2. Trevor Leimeister (23.18) in the 200 and Franklin Clark in the 3200 (12:20.1) each placed fourth. For the Edison girls, Harper Salmons in the pole vault (8 get 6) and Autumn Krieg-Moore in the 100 hurdles (18.72) each placed fourth. For St. Paul, the 4x200 relay of Kira Sandor, Brooklyn Cassidy, Aubrie Bogard, and Deanna Vazquez finished third in 1:50.77. The 4x400 of Frances Donnelly, Bogard, Amelia Stoll, and Vazquez also placed third in 4:21.03. Vazquez was also fourth in the 200 (27.89), as was Adam Dowdell in the 800 (2:06.01).
