Huron County Sheriff's Office gets $200K state grant

NORWALK — The Huron County Sheriff's Office is set to receive just over $200,000 through the latest round of state funding aimed at reducing violent crime, according to an announcement this week from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. The sheriff's office will receive just over $200,800 as part of the fifteenth round of the Ohio Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program, which is administered through the Ohio Department of Public Safety. In total, 44 law enforcement agencies across 28 counties will share $3.4 million in this round of funding. The grants are designed to support a range of strategies, including investigative overtime, targeted patrols in high-crime areas and the use of new technology to assist in crime prevention and investigations, according to the release. "There is no shortage of innovative ideas that our local law enforcement agencies are using to combat violent crime in their communities," DeWine said. "Their work to implement crime-fighting technology and tactics is making Ohio safer." The funding announced this week is part of Ohio's 2026-27 operating budget. Since the program launched in 2021, more than $87 million has been distributed to over 200 law enforcement agencies statewide. Other agencies receiving funding in this round include departments and sheriff's offices in counties such as Cuyahoga, Franklin, Montgomery and Mahoning, with individual awards ranging from less than $10,000 to nearly $300,000 depending on the scope of each agency's proposal. The Huron County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how the office plans to use its share.
