St. Paul falls at New Riegel; Eagles rally

NEW RIEGEL — In a matchup of two teams that played for district championships last season, host New Riegel scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to push past St. Paul for a 4-1 non-league win on Thursday. St. Paul (5-3) got its lone run when Mallorie Sowers singled in the top of the fourth. Courtesy runner Shealyn Deeter then scored on a wild pitch. Ryleigh Mansfield-Bush finished 2 for 4 with a double for the Flyers, while Addy Rospert and Ella Kalizewski added singles. In the circle, Bella Guerra allowed four earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk over five innings. Taegan Mansfield-Bush also pitched a scoreless inning. A year ago, the Flyers lost to Monroeville in a district title game, and the Jackets were edged by Mohawk in the same round. Both Mohawk and Monroeville went on to win their regional and met in a state semifinal at Akron. St. Paul will take on Perkins and host Edison on Saturday in Milan. St. Paul 000 100 0 — 1 5 0 N. Mansfield-Bush Monroeville 8, SJCC 5 FREMONT — The Eagles rallied from a deficit for a second straight day, this time by scoring six runs over the final two innings for a win over the host Crimson Streaks on Thursday. Madi Reiber was 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Eagles (6-2). Payton Weilnau was 2 for 5 with a double, while Taylor Scheid singled with four RBIs and Ava Wadsworth tripled with two RBIs. Brooke Morman added two hits for Monroeville, which saw Weilnau pitch the final 2 2/3 innings of relief. She struck out seven and walked one in scoreless work.
