St. Paul teams finish sweep of Western

NORWALK — The St. Paul baseball team turned a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning into a 9-1 win over visiting Western Reserve in Firelands Conference play Wednesday at Norwalk Area Contractors Park. The Flyers improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the FC with the win. St. Paul got a complete-game effort on the mound from senior Izaac Snyder. He allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out 12 batters with just one walk. "Great to start 2-0," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "Izaac was in command from the first pitch, and defensively we really played well." Nate Griffin singled and scored on an error in the bottom of the third for the 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Izaac Snyder singled and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Alex Marsh. Landon Fries was hit by a pitch, and Marsh scored when Isaac Kalizewski also hit into a fielder's choice. Brady Fritz hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Landon Fries for a 4-0 lead. In the fifth, Izaac Snyder reached on a dropped third strike, and River Couch, who led the inning with a walk, scored on a balk. Marsh walked, then Landon Fries drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0. Kalizewski then capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 8-0, and then an RBI groundout by Fritz made it 9-0 to score Landon Fries. Western (0-3, 0-2) scored in the top of the seventh as Alex Kolb doubled and scored on a dropped third strike. Caleb Pausch and Blake Welch added singles for the Roughriders. "Offensively, I thought we did a great job of working counts," Coach Fries said. "It took us a bit to get the first one, but then we were able to open it up." The senior allowed two earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in a complete game in the circle over seven innings for the Flyers (5-2, 2-0). Ella Kalizewski opened the scoring with an RBI double, then Mia Taggart, running for Kalizewski, scored on an RBI double from Taegan Mansfield-Bush for a 2-0 lead. Payton Preston added a two-run single, then Addy Rospert closed the inning with an RBI triple for the 5-0 lead. In the fourth, Mallorie Sowers singled in Bella Guerra and Ryleigh Mansfield-Bush to make it 7-0. The Roughriders (0-3, 0-2) scored in the top of the fifth when Lilli Jarrett hit an RBI single to score Josette Spragg, who also reached on a single.
