Four area teams win FC openers

COLLINS — The St. Paul baseball team got another strong start from sophomore Alex Marsh to open Firelands Conference play with a 9-2 win over host Western Reserve on Monday. Marsh allowed two earned runs on three hits. He struck out 13 batters with three walks over seven innings. Marsh threw 95 pitches (63 strikes). "It was a great way to open conference play," St. Paul head coach Aaron Fries said. "Alex was sharp, and defensively we handled the tough winds with ease. Offensively we did a really nice job of working the counts and executing as a team. Marsh was also 2 for 3 a the plate and walked twice and scored a run for the Flyers (4-1, 1-0). Isaac Kalizewski singled and walked three times, while Casey Fries and Gabe Snyder each singled with an RBI. The Flyers drew 11 walks in the win. For Western (0-2, 0-1), Caleb Pausch singled with an RBI, while Gavin Trzil singled and scored, and Landyn Wiegel singled. Alex Kolb added an RBI and Cooper Roe scored a run. Ethan Smiley went five scoreless innings and held Plymouth to one hit — a single by L. Distl. He struck out five and walked four. At the plate, Alex Dowell and Owen Patchen each had two hits and two RBIs. Reid Wasserman also had two hits and an RBI, while Link Schaffer-Paull singled with three RBIs, and Jake Fries also had two hits. Wes June scored on a steal of home to bring the Trojans within 4-3. Cole Frankart then won the game with a two-run single to left field. Bryan Chaffee also singled with two RBIs. P Layne also added two hits. June went the first six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out seven and walked five.
