Norwalk baseball walks off Shelby on errors

NORWALK — The Norwalk baseball team won in walk-off fashion Monday for a 6-5 win in nine innings over visiting Shelby in a non-league game at NHS. Tied at 5-5, the Truckers' Noah Helton and Brady Singer reached on consecutive errors. Helton had reached second on the first misplay, then was able to come home again and score on an error near first base for the winning run as Norwalk improved to 4-1. "A good team win," NHS head coach Jason Higgins said. "We cleared the bench and used a lot of chess moves to put ourselves in the best spot to pull it off. Our guys kept grinding and stayed loose when we got down. "Shelby played a tough defensive game, and it was hard to scratch runs across against them. But our guys were competing, and that's all we ask." Caiden Wilson had two hits for Norwalk, while Canyon Craig reached base twice on walks. Carter Harp, Wesley Shupe, Landon Ferkel, and Grady Naseman each singled, and Singer and Kaedyn Warner each had an RBI. Four different Norwalk pitchers limited the Whippets to three earned runs on four hits. Nate King went four innings and allowed one earned run on one hit with six strikeouts and two walks. Helton got the win in relief with two scoreless innings with two hits and three strikeouts and a walk. The Truckers are scheduled to host Old Fort on Tuesday and visit Sandusky Wednesday in the SBC Lake opener. Norwalk then has a non-league home game with Plymouth on Thursday, then a league game on Friday against Clyde to wrap up a busy week if the weather allows. Maddie Gamble was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for Norwalk (1-5). Scarlet Schneider also had two hits and an RBI, while Saige Viock doubled and scored. Lola Schlotterer added a single for the Truckers, who also have the same remaining schedule this week as the baseball team.
