New ElderCollege president named

HURON TWP. — Bowling Green State University Firelands' ElderCollege named its new president. Richard Ries took the position to lead ElderCollege's adult students. The program serves those who are age 50 and older who want to learn a variety of topics like history, culture, current events, science, art and more, according to its website. It also offers field trips to local organizations and businesses. He replaced Karen Walderzak, who joined the ElderCollege board in 2013 and served as vice president and president. "I am honored to accept the role and responsibilities of president of ElderCollege," Ries said. "As I begin my tenure, I want to express my deep appreciation to Karen Walderzak for her vision, leadership and many accomplishments as our immediate past president." With over three decades of experience in higher education, Ries joins ElderCollege's mission of connecting adult students with up-to-date information, educational experiences and opportunities. His resume includes teaching undergraduate and MBA programs and acting as dean of the University Center at Polaris, a satellite of DeVry University. He oversaw the schooling and administration of multiple degree programs. "We are proud of the opportunities ElderCollege provides to enrich lives through lifelong learning," Ries said. "This program embodies the BGSU Firelands commitment to community engagement and intellectual growth."
