Public health demand climbs in Huron County

NORWALK — More Huron County residents turned to the local health department more often for services in 2025, with increases showing up across vaccinations, clinic visits and sustained care programs. The most noticeable jump came in vaccinations, according to an annual report recently released by Huron County Public Health. The health department reported 4,327 immunizations in 2025, up from 3,383 the year before. That total includes routine vaccines, flu shots and COVID-19 doses. The report shows 666 children received vaccines through the federally supported Vaccines for Children program, while 57 uninsured adults also received vaccinations through local services. Clinic stats Other clinical activity at the department, based in Norwalk on Executive Drive, also remained steady. The department recorded: • 314 reproductive health visits during the year, including 90 new patients. Those visits included screenings, treatment and referrals. • About 180 families received case management through the Complex Medical Help program, which supports children with ongoing medical needs. These are not one-time appointments but multiple visits, according to the report. • Nurses also conducted 93 home visits for vaccinations and case management services. The report also notes that services provided by the department are available regardless of a patient's ability to pay, with sliding-fee options and programs for uninsured residents. Data gathering Public health work also included evidence-gathering outside clinic settings. The department tracked 345 communicable disease cases, not including COVID-19. The most commonly reported illnesses included chlamydia, hepatitis C and gonorrhea. The agency also partnered with 10 local schools to monitor absenteeism trends to track the spread of illness in classrooms. Mental health Mental health and substance use prevention efforts also continued in 2025. A county review committee examined six suicide deaths and four overdose deaths to identify risk factors and improve prevention strategies. The department also distributed more than 200 gun safes and over 100 weapon locks as part of its youth suicide prevention work. Environmental health Environmental health remained a large part of the agency's workload: • Staff conducted 1,072 inspections across food facilities, campgrounds, pools and other sites. • The department also handled 84 public health complaints and investigated 123 reports related to animal bites and possible rabies exposure. Water and sewage issues were another focus area. Through a state-backed loan program, residents could apply for assistance to repair or replace failing septic systems, with some receiving up to full cost coverage. Health officials said proper maintenance of those systems is important to protect groundwater and local water sources. Quality of life Community-based programs continued to aim at improving the quality of life for county residents. Grant funding supported park improvements, community gardens and food pantry upgrades, with produce from local gardens donated to the Norwalk Area Food Bank. Vital statistics from the report show 453 births and 529 deaths recorded in Huron County in 2025. The year also included internal changes. The department added several new staff members and saw a leadership transition late in the year following the retirement of longtime health commissioner Tim Hollinger. Nicole Marks stepped into that role in 2025. Looking forward In the future, the department said it plans to complete a new community health assessment and strategic plan while preparing for a levy request expected to appear on the November ballot.
