Eagles start strong in win over Norwalk

MONROEVILLE — The Monroeville softball team opened with a 12-4 win over visiting Norwalk on Saturday in a non-league game at Clark Park. The Eagles scored seven runs in the second inning to give head coach Pat Scheid his first career win. Leading 7-0 after two innings, the Eagles added three more runs in the third for a 10-2 advantage. Madi Reiber, last season's hero in the state semifinals, opened her season in a big way. She hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third and also singled with three RBIs and three runs scored. Lilly Clark, who was on base for Reiber's home run, singled and scored three runs. Genna Bragg also had a base hit and scored twice. Taylor Scheid earned the win in the circle for Monroeville. She went 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Alexis Dellisanti had a double and scored a run for the Truckers, while Saige Viock added a base hit and an RBI as well. Skyler Helton also singled and scored twice for Norwalk. In the circle for the Truckers, Viock pitched the first with seven earned runs on no hits, but seven walks and three strikeouts. Sophia Ames followed her with the last 4 1/3 innings. She allowed five unearned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Norwalk is at Huron on Tuesday, while the Eagles head to Wellington on the same day. London 22, Willard 20 NEW LONDON — Plenty of runs were scored in Saturday's non-league doubleheader split between the Crimson Flashes and the Wildcats. The two teams combined for 62 runs in 13 innings for the day. Willard claimed a 16-4 win in six innings in the opener as it had 18 hits. Kenley Bond was 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI, and three runs out of the leadoff spot for the Flashes, while Meredith Ames was also 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. Also finishing with three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored was Emma Steinmetz. Natalie Slone was 2 for 5 with a triple and an RBI. Makenzie Sykes and Ava Deel each finished with two hits and an RBI, while Adalyn Michalski singled with three RBIs. In the circle, Deel allowed four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk in six innings for the win. For New London, Gracie Thomas was 2 for 2 with a solo home run, while Olivia Yetter was 2 for 3 with an RBI. In the second game, New London trailed 10-2 after the first inning and 17-6 entering the bottom of the fifth. But the Wildcats avoided the run-rule loss with eight runs in their half of the frame, then added five runs in the sixth and turned a 20-19 deficit into a walk-off win with a three-run home run by Pailee Wilson in the bottom of the seventh. The home run capped a massive game for Wilson, who was 4 for 6 with a double and eight RBIs. Thomas also homered again with a pair of RBIs and scored four times, while Natalie Weaver was 4 for 6 with one double, one triple, and three RBIs. Also for NL, Addison Yetter doubled twice with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. For Willard, Slone was 4 for 4 with two doubles, one triple, four RBIs, and five runs scored. Ellie Whitright was 4 for 5 with one double, one triple, and five RBIs. Steinmetz was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Ames was 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs. Skyles had three hits and scored twice, while Michalski was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and scored four times. Willard is scheduled to host Clyde on Monday, while the Wildcats visit Wellington on Thursday. Plymouth finished with 19 hits for the game, led by Taylor Dean, who finished 4 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs. Makayla Cunningham was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, while Zarah Plank was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Also for the Big Red, Karsyn Steele-Adkins and Presley Martin each were 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Madison Mongomery was 2 for 4 and Kristi Yeager was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. In the circle, Zarah Plank got the win in relief of Madison Montgomery. She went the last four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
