High winds strike, but serious damage avoided

NORWALK — The branches scattered across yards and a tarp flapping over a roof tell the story of this past weekend's windstorm. But as cleanup continues across Huron County, officials say the bigger story might be what didn't happen. Huron County Emergency Management Agency director Art Mead said the weather system brought sustained winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour — enough to cause problems, but not enough to tip into a major emergency. "There was damage to shingles, utility poles, power lines and some minor structures, but no major damage," Mead said. The storm didn't have a narrow path. It pressed across the entire county all at once. There were no tornadoes or hail reported, just hours of consistent wind. "Every part of the county got hit," he said. "It wasn't like a tornado. It was a sustained wind event." Recent wet weather made matters worse. With the ground already saturated, poles and trees had less support than usual, according to Mead. "That caused a lot of utility poles to blow over," Mead said. Even so, the county has not received formal damage reports from residents. The EMA opened a reporting option on social media after the storm, but as of Tuesday, it remained unused. One call did come in, though, and it uncovered a concern Mead says comes up often. An older resident asked why the outdoor warning sirens never sounded. Those sirens, he explained, are only activated for tornado warnings, not for straight-line winds — a term to describe the gusts that struck the area — even when those winds are strong enough to cause damage. That distinction is exactly why the county has been urging residents to enroll in its emergency alert system, a tool designed to reach people directly when sirens won't. Get alerts in Regroup Earlier this year, the county transitioned away from its previous alert platform and launched a new system, Regroup. Residents who want to receive alerts must sign up to be included. Mead said the weekend storm is a reminder that not every serious weather event comes with a siren, and that relying on one can leave gaps. "We strongly encourage all residents to sign up as soon as possible to ensure uninterrupted access to critical emergency information," the agency said in a prior release. The system is used for a range of notifications, including road and traffic alerts, snow advisories and weather warnings, the kinds of updates that don't always trigger sirens but can still affect daily life and safety.
