Village purchases new garbage truck

NEW LONDON — New London's village council acted on a long list of ordinances and resolutions Monday. Items included finalizing an update on the employee handbook for uniform allowances, joining the Sourcewell Cooperative Purchasing Program and buying a new garbage truck for $265,611. A discussion ensued after the rejection of the first reading of a resolution to hire an architectural firm to draw plans for a new office at theReservoir Park. Several members said they wanted more information on how the project would be funded. The issue will appear on next meeting's agenda. Fire Chief John Chapin said his department recently received two State Fire Marshal grants, one for $40,000 and one for $15,000. The moneywill be used for protective gear and other items. Administrator Shawn Pickworth reported the Army Corps of Engineers will do a study of the erosion at Buck Creek where reservoir water istaken at no cost to the village. Also, dive teams will be inspecting both the water intake and water outtake areas of the reservoir for anyneeded repairs. Soccer coach Haley Robuck said 90 players have signed up for the spring sessions, and she needs more playing and storage space. She received suggestions for both issues. Spring cleanup is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 19 and April 25, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 20-24. Breakfast with the Easter Bunny is 9-11 a.m. onSunday, March 29 at the Recreation Park.
