GoBus routes starting up

NORWALK — Intercity bus service has arrived in Norwalk as part of a statewide expansion of the GoBus network. The service began operating in Norwalk on March 2, adding the city to a growing system designed to connect smaller communities with major cities across Ohio and the region. GoBus, operated by Hocking Athens Perry Community Action, recently expanded its network with four new routes that add 26 stop locations across western and northern Ohio. The expansion also includes service connecting Columbus and Pittsburgh. Local riders say the service has generally worked well and remains an affordable option for travel. That includes Ashley Stephens, who said her family has used GoBus frequently when her son travels between home and Ohio University. "My son attends OU down in Athens and we use it a lot for in between break trips," Stephens said. "Depending on where they do pick ups, we have only had one bad experience. Aside from that no issues (and) affordable pricing." New GoBus stops include cities such as Dayton, Findlay, Lima, Ashtabula, Sandusky, Toledo, Springfield and Zanesville, along with several rural communities. The expansion is aimed at improving access to transportation for residents who may not have a personal vehicle or reliable travel options. Officials say the service can help people reach jobs, medical appointments, schools and other essential services. GoBus operates 56-passenger motor coaches that are wheelchair accessible and equipped with Wi-Fi, power outlets at every seat, additional legroom, onboard restrooms and seat belts. The routes also connect riders to major airports. Travelers can reach Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport through the network. Connections to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are available through the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's Red Line train. Fares begin at $5, plus tax and service fees, and no one-way trip costs more than $40 per person. The program is funded through the federal Intercity Bus Program and administered by the Ohio Department of Transportation in partnership with Hocking Athens Perry Community Action. GoBus launched in Ohio in 2010 and has grown steadily over the past 15 years. The system carried about 10,000 riders during its first year of operation. By 2025, annual ridership had grown to more than 123,000 passengers. With the newest expansion, the network now operates nine routes with stops in 64 cities and towns across Ohio. The system also connects with 27 local transit services and 32 universities.
