Seven advance to district tournament

CLYDE — Four from Norwalk and three from New London earned spots at next week's girls wrestling Division II Findlay district at Friday's sectional meet at Clyde High School. Advancing for the Truckers included Olivia Ysaguirre (30-11), Roxlynn Clifton (23-16), Allison Dennis (28-11), and Jimna Ornelas (6-6). Ysaguirre placed second at 115 pounds. She went 2-1 for the day, pinning Lexington's Amelia Bender in 30 seconds and Toledo Central Catholic's Sophia Swanson in 4:45 before losing by fall to Shelby's Hope Timko in 36 seconds. Dennis placed third for the Truckers at 170 pounds, where she finished 3-1. The junior opened with a pin in 49 seconds over Coldwater's Piper Ganser, then fell in a 4-2 decision to Vermilion's Faith Sergent. Dennis responded with two wins in the consolation rounds. She pinned Mansfield Madison's Aliana Ash in 58 seconds, then pinned Port Clinton's Rylie Budinger in 36 seconds in the third-place match. Clifton (120) and Omelas (190) each placed fourth in their respective weight classes to move on. A junior, Clifton opened with two pins over Western Reserve's Alanah Purdy (40 seconds) and Rossford's Ava Reinhart (1:48) before losing by fall in 45 seconds to Clyde's Meredith Greenslade in the semifinals. Clifton bounced back to pin Oregon Clay's Amy Kanavel in 1:56 before losing in the third-place match to Ashland's Gracen Brockett by fall in 3:52. Advancing to the district tournament for New London included junior Ava Downs (24-9) and seniors Gwyneth Voltz (16-20) and Hallie Pylant (20-17). Downs defeated Mansfield Madison's Chloe Gilbert with a 23-5 technical fall, then fell in the finals by fall in 54 seconds against Defiance Tinora's Bella Graziani (32-0). Voltz was third at 235, while Pylant went 1-3 to place sixth at 140. Her lone win came in a consolation quarterfinal, where she pinned Tiffin Columbian's Jovey Seville in 2:54. The district meet will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 8. The field includes the top four placers from the Clyde, Defiance, Findlay, and Avon Lake sectional meets.
