South Central girls win host powerlifting meet

GREENWICH — The South Central High School powerlifting program hosted its 24th annual home meet on Feb. 21 at the school. More than 130 athletes competed, and 16 meet records fell at the event, including eight broken by the host Trojans. The S.C. girls won the meet, which was their third win this season. Western Reserve took first on the boys side, while the shot Trojans placed fourth. In the 175-pound weight class, South Central's Autumn Fry tied the bench record (160 pounds) that was originally set by the Trojans' Chelsea Blanchard in 2010. Fry also set a new squat record (320) and a new meet record of 790 total pounds as she won all three vents to place first overall. At 125, Riley Major won the bench press (135), squat (240), and the deadlift (310) for 685 pounds, a new meet record. She also qualified for a fourth attempt in the squat and set a new meet record of 255 pounds, while the deadlift total was also a new record. Lauren Ingram won the 135-pound weight class for the Trojans. She took first in the bench (120) and squat (235), and set a new meet and program record with a 305-pound deadlift on her way to 655 total pounds. Jenna Shepherd took first overall at 225 by winning the bench (140), squat (325), and deadlift (335). She set a new meet and program record with the deadlift, and finished with 790 pounds. In the unlimited weight class, Izzy Lucha also won all three lifts for 720 pounds and first place. Lucha totaled 140 in the bench, 280 in the squat, and 300 in the deadlift. The Roughriders had three champions and three runner-ups on the boys side. At 145, Xzarian Meagrow won with 205 pounds (bench), 405 (squat), and 405 (deadlift) for 1,015 total pounds. Gabe Corroll-Mulder was first at 185 with a bench (255), squat (415), and deadlift (415) for 1,085 pounds, while Layndyn Wiegel won at 195 with 1,240 pounds form a bench (265), squat (475), and deadlift (500). Peyton Kirby (905), Blake Welch (1,145), and Fletcher Radcliff (1,330) each placed second for Western at 155, 210, and 250 pounds, respectively, for Western. Colton Meagrow (740) was third at 135. For the South Central boys, the lone first-place finisher was Lucas Smith at 275. He won the bench (250 pounds) and had a personal-best and top deadlift of 525 pounds to finish first with 1,160 total pounds. New London's Jaxson Speicher was second at 175 pounds with a 1,115 total, as was Garrett Weisman at 195 with 825 pounds. James Oldfield was third in the unlimited class (1,155).
