Toy show tradition returns to Collins for 35th year

COLLINS — By the time late winter starts to drag, there's usually a sure sign that spring isn't far behind: folding tables filling a school gym, the low hum of collectors talking shop, and rows of die-cast tractors gleaming under fluorescent lights. The 35th Annual Western Reserve Toy and Collectible Show returns from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, at Western Reserve Elementary School, 3851 U.S. Route 20 in Collins, about three miles west of Wakeman and seven miles east of Norwalk. Organizers with the Western Reserve Ruritan Club say the event has become something of a tradition for collectors and families alike. "What started decades ago as a gathering for farm toy enthusiasts has grown into a regional show featuring everything from antique pressed-steel trucks to modern 3D-printed pieces," organizer Rich Ruess said. In 2025, the show drew 45 vendors who filled 102 tables inside the school. As of Feb. 18, 40 vendors from around Ohio had already reserved 101 tables for this year's event, a sign, organizers say, that interest remains strong heading into its 35th year. Shoppers can expect a wide range of items: new and vintage farm toys, railroad pieces, construction models, dolls, NASCAR collectibles, wood toys, sports cards, Pokémon cards, signs, books, manuals, die-cast vehicles, Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, action figures, Tonka and Buddy L trucks, pedal cars, Hallmark ornaments, Marx play sets and more. At least two vendors will offer a broad selection of new Ertl farm toys. One exhibitor specializes exclusively in Oliver tractors, while others plan to bring custom-built toy tractors and trucks. Organizers also noted that 3D-printed toys will be among the displays this year. For some visitors, the appeal is hunting down a specific piece, perhaps a farm tractor that matches the one still parked in a family barn. For others, it's the chance to revisit childhood favorites or introduce a new generation to the toys they once lined up across a living room floor. Admission is $3. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Plenty of free parking will be available on site. A lunch counter, staffed by the Hartland New Horizon 4-H Club, will operate during the show. Door prizes donated by area businesses, individuals and vendors will be awarded throughout the day. The Ruritan Club, a local civic organization, uses proceeds from the toy show to fund at least two scholarships for Western Reserve students and to support other community needs. Club members say the show has long served not only as a fundraiser but also as a welcome winter diversion for the community.
