Six earn OHSBCA District 6 first team

Six area girls basketball players were voted to the District 6 first team in their respective divisions by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced on Feb. 17. In the combined Divisions II-III, a pair of Norwalk starters landed on the first team in senior guard Trinity Lazzara and junior post Emmie Leber. Lazzara led the Truckers with a balanced offensive attack. She averaged 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.7 steals over 22 games. She was also tabbed the alternate for the North-South All-Star game. Leber averaged 12.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game during the regular season while shooting 47 percent on two-pointers. Also from Norwalk, freshman post Jo Jackson (9.1 points, 7.1 rebounds) earned honorable mention. The Truckers finished 16-6 overall and 8-2 in the SBC Lake Division during the regular season. Player of the Year honors went to Ashland junior Kennedy Lacey (22.7 points), while Coach of the Year was Ashland's Renee Holt. In Div. V, a trio of SBC Bay Division standouts were also first team, including Willard seniors Camryn Wiers and Corrin Gettys. Gettys averaged 12 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game during the regular season. Wiers added nine points, six rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. Gettys shot 52 percent on two-pointers, while Wiers shot 57 percent and made a team-high 31 three-pointers. Ranked No. 7 by MaxPreps, Willard finished the season 18-4 overall and 8-2 in the league with a pair of close losses to Div. VI No. 1 Margaretta (21-1, 10-0). Edison senior post Ella Booth also earned first-team honors after she averaged a double-double with 11.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game for the Chargers (8-13, 2-8). Second team recognition went to Willard senior Reese Bedingfield (8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds) and Edison senior Stella Brown (7.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.3 steals). Player of the Year honors in Div. V went to Clear Fork junior Ava Boccio (17.1 points), while Port Clinton's Kevin Belden earned Coach of the Year. New London senior wing Valery Henry was a first-team selection in Div. VI. She averaged 11.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game for the Wildcats (19-3, 14-0), who won their third straight Firelands Conference title. Five other FC players earned second team, including two of Henry's classmates in Gracie Thomas (9.7 points, 8.5 rebounds) and Raeann Mitchell (7.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists). Also on the second team in Div. VI were Monroeville sophomore Sophia Stieber (13.3 points, 3.2 steals), Western Reserve senior Layken Barnhart (10.5 points), and South Central senior Emily Lamoreaux (9.5 points, 11.8 rebounds). Gibsonburg's Elly Evarts (20.3 points) was Player of the Year, and Margaretta's Ray Neill was Coach of the Year. A pair of FC players earned second team recognition in Div. VII. They included Plymouth junior Kendyll Tolbert (10.1 points) and St. Paul junior Ella Kalizewski (5.3 points, 6.1 rebounds).
