NL pulls away from Trojans in road win

GREENWICH — The New London boys basketball team outscored host South Central by 13 points in the second half to pull away for a 74-58 win in Firelands Conference play Tuesday night. The Wildcats (12-8, 6-7) were up 33-30 at halftime, then pushed the lead out to 53-41 through three quarters. NL then held a slight 21-17 edge in the fourth quarter. Jaxson Schaffer scored 23 points for New London, while Jarrett Mencl had 13 points and Brody Sword scored 12. Grady Heileman added 10 points, and Henry Thomas scored eight as the 'Cats just missed putting five players in double-figures. Wes June scored a game-high 24 points for the Trojans (10-11, 4-9), who also got 16 points from Bryan Chaffee in the defeat. The Wildcats close out the regular season Friday at home against Mapleton (2-18, 0-13), while the Trojans head to Monroeville (14-5, 10-3). Willard (18-3) led 40-31 at halftime, but the Warriors (14-7) chipped away at the lead in the second half. The Flashes were led by Jaxson Hall with 21 points, while JJ Bedingfield scored 18 and Kaleb Weaver had 12. The Flashes close out the regular season against longtime rival Bellevue (12-8) at home on Friday.
