Norwalk puts two on Lake first team

The Norwalk girls basketball team put two standouts on the All-Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division first team, the league announced on Feb. 17. Junior post Emmie Leber was a unanimous selection, and she was joined by senior guard Trinity Lazzara. A unanimous selection by the coaches, Leber averaged 12.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game during the regular season while shooting 47 percent on two-pointers. Lazzara led the Truckers with a balanced offensive attack. She averaged 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.7 steals over 22 games. Also from Norwalk, freshman post Jo Jackson (9.1 points, 7.1 rebounds) earned honorable mention recognition. The Truckers finished with another strong regular season at 16-6 overall and 8-2 in the league, good for second place with a pair of losses to defending state champion Bellevue (22-0, 10-0), the No. 1-ranked team in Division IV. A No. 2 seed in its district, Norwalk entertains Mansfield Senior (0-19) in a Div. III sectional championship game at 6 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 19) at NHS. Bellevue senior Kaitlyn Turinsky (12.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.1 blocks) earned Most Outstanding Performer honors in the Lake. Three earn Bay first team Willard had two seniors and Edison had one senior earn All-SBC Bay Division first team honors. The Crimson Flashes (18-4, 8-2) were represented on the first team by Corrin Gettys and Camryn Wiers. Gettys averaged 12 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game during the regular season. Wiers added nine points, six rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. Gettys shot 52 percent on two-pointers, while Wiers shot 57 percent and made a team-high 31 three-pointers. Also on the first team was Edison post Ella Booth. She averaged a double-double with 11.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game for the Chargers (8-13, 2-8). Earning second team for Willard was senior Reese Bedingfield (8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds). The Flashes lost two close games by a combined seven points to Div. VI No. 1-ranked Margaretta (21-1, 10-0) in league play. Ranked No. 7 in Div. V, Willard hosts Huron (7-15) in a sectional title game at 2 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 21). The Chargers also visit Eastwood (11-10) in a sectional title game at 2 p.m. Feb. 21.
