Monroeville clinches FC title share

MONROEVILLE — The Monroeville boys basketball team didn't play its best game, but it was more than enough in Friday's 72-60 win over visiting Mapleton on Steve Moore Court. Shortly after the win over the Mounties (2-17, 0-13), the Eagles (14-5, 10-3) learned that Firelands Conference rival St. Paul (12-9, 7-6) had defeated Plymouth (13-7, 9-4) on two free throws with 1.6 seconds left. The win by the Flyers helped Monroeville clinch no worse than a share of the program's first FC title since the 1983-84 season. In Friday's game, Monroeville led 22-16 after one quarter and 44-31 at halftime. The Mounties held a slight 29-28 edge in the second half. Cole Perry paced Monroeville with 20 points, while Derek Ackerman had 13 and Maverick Myers scored eight. The Eagles can win the league title outright next Friday at home against South Central (10-10, 4-8). Monroeville won in Greenwich by a 70-57 score back on Jan. 21. Monroeville heads to Edison for a non-league game Wednesday before hosting the Trojans Friday and Fremont St. Joseph (1-17) on Saturday. Chase Hipp scored 18 points and also had six rebounds for Western, while Tyler Cooper had 12 points and five rebounds, and Cooper Roe also had 12 points. Hayden Keith scored eight points to go with six rebounds and four assists, while Hayden Dobias also added eight points. P. Clinton 63, Edison 56 MILAN — The Redskins made 13 three-pointers and outscored the Chargers by 14 points in the third quarter of Friday's narrow SBC Bay Division win. Coltyn Meagrow scored a game-high 24 points to lead Edison (8-11), while Cole Leimeister added 20 points.
