Local students qualify for regional basketball contest

NORWALK — Several area basketball players are moving on to the regional round of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest after turning in strong performances at district competitions. Among those advancing is Kelvin Lodermeier of Norwalk, who finished first in the boys 10-year-old division while representing the Norwalk Knights of Columbus Council. He will join other district champions from neighboring communities at the next level of competition. The regional contest will take place Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Ottoville Parish Center Gymnasium, 150 Park Drive in Ottoville. Registration will begin at noon, followed by an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and a review of contest rules at 12:30 p.m. Shooting is set to start at 1 p.m., with participants competing by age group as baskets become available, according to the press release. Other district winners advancing include Jase Russell, the boys 9-year-old champion representing the Vermilion Council; Emberly Gustafson, girls 9, and Bryson Moore, boys 11, both representing the New London Council; Ryleigh Gustafson, girls 11, also from New London; and Brennan Metzger of the Norwalk Council. Basketballs will be provided for all contestants, and awards are expected to be presented once each round of shooting is completed. Regional winners will qualify for the Ohio State Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. Organizers said the annual program is designed to promote sportsmanship and confidence while offering boys and girls ages 9 through 14 an opportunity to compete. The Ottoville Knights of Columbus will host a pancake and sausage breakfast during the event. The meal will be available for a donation.
