Willard wins to set up Bay showdown

PORT CLINTON — The Willard boys basketball team did its part. Now, the Crimson Flashes will get a shot at the SBC Bay Division championship on their home floor this Friday inside Bob Haas Gymnasium following a 61-46 rescheduled road win over host Port Clinton Tuesday night. Division V No. 15-ranked Willard (17-2, 8-1) will host Div. V No. 5 Margaretta (17-3, 9-0) on Friday needing a win to force a co-league title in its final season in the league. The Polar Bears pulled away late for a 67-55 win over the Flashes on Jan. 9 in Castalia in the first meeting. In Tuesday's win over the Redskins, Jaxson Hall scored a game-high 22 points for WIllard. Central 77, Rittman 53 GREENWICH — The Trojans got back to the .500 mark with two games left in the regular season with Tuesday's non-league win over the Indians. South Central (10-10) got out to a 23-13 lead after one quarter, and maintained a 44-35 lead at halftime. The Trojans then pulled further way in the second half with a 33-18 scoring advantage South Central was led by Wes June with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting to go with 12 rebounds and six steals. Bryan Chaffee had 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Tanner Back had seven points and eight rebounds, and Troy Ayers added eight points. The Trojans (4-8 FC) host New London (10-8, 5-7) in Firelands Conference play on Friday. The Wildcats won the first meeting, 56-52, on Jan. 9. GIRLS BASKETBALL New London 46, Crestview 33 NEW LONDON — The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a perfect Firelands Conference record for the third straight year following Tuesday's win over the Cougars. New London (19-3, 14-0) won a league record 43 consecutive FC games dating back to Feb. 10, 2023, which was exactly three years to the day from Tuesday's victory. Raeann Mitchell paced NL with 14 points and Gracie Thoams had 10. Pailee Wilson scored eight, while Valery Henry and Olivia Yetter each scored seven. The Wildcats are the No. 2 seed in the Div. VI Napoleon district. They will host nearby rival Western Reserve (11-9), the No. 5 seed, at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 in a sectional title game. New London won by 10 and 14 points, respectively, during the regular season. The Chargers head to Eastwood on Feb. 21 for a Div. V sectional tournament game. JUNIOR HIGH NMS seventh-grade teams advance The Norwalk seventh-grade girls basketball team defeated Sandusky, 37-15, Tuesday night to advance to the SBC Lake Division championship game this Saturday in Sandusky. Lexi Schmidt scored 24 points for the Truckers (14-0), while Kayla Naseman had seven points. They were followed by Ella Ames (4) and Adelinn Sitterly (2). The seventh-grade boys also stayed undefeated with a 39-24 win Tuesday over Bellevue. Benny Sellers scored 17 points, followed by Ethan Jones with nine and Maddox Gamble with seven. Lincoln King (4) and Eli Schmidt (2) rounded out the scoring. The Truckers face Perkins at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at Sandusky for the league tournament title. The eighth-grade boys closed the season with an 11-5 record after a 40-30 loss to Bellevue in the SBC Lake semifinals on Tuesday. Blake Muskovich had 19 points for the Truckers. He was followed by Jacob Tyler (5), Ryker Crumrine (4), and Jose Benavides (2). The eighth-grade girls also fell to Bellevue by a 33-32 score in the league semifinals to finish the season at 11-2. Stella Kipp paced the team with 18 points. She was followed by Lilli Kipp, Londynn Clifton, and Brynn Sellers with four points each.
