New London wraps up third straight outright FC title

NEW LONDON — The New London girls basketball team clinched its third straight outright Firelands Conference championship with Friday's 56-18 win over visiting South Central. The Wildcats (18-3, 13-0) have won 42 consecutive FC games in that span, and will look to finish off another perfect league season Tuesday when they host Crestview (11-7, 7-3). In Friday's win over the Trojans, Pailee Wilson scored 17 points. She was followed by Valery Henry with 13, and Gracie Thomas with 12. Raeann Mitchell added eight points and Olivia Yetter scored six. The only other program to win three or more outright FC titles in a row was Western Reserve from 2009-13. New London's 42 straight wins is also the longest conference win streak in FC girls basketball history. St. Paul (10-11, 7-6) led 9-4 after one quarter and 17-10 at halftime, then maintained its lead throughout the second half. Raeleigh Friend scored 11 points and sibling Annie Friend made three 3s and had nine points for the Flyers, who close out the regular season on Feb. 12 vs. Crestview. ST.
