NL clinches third straight FC title share

ORANGE TWP. — The New London girls basketball team can do no worse than a share of a third straight Firelands Conference championship. The Wildcats (17-3, 12-0) won their 41st straight FC game — a league record — by rallying past host Mapleton (15-4, 10-2) for a 47-40 win Tuesday night. New London will host South Central (5-14, 1-11) Friday night with a chance to clinch a third straight outright title. New London trailed 26-18 with 3:54 left in the third quarter, but went on an 18-4 run to take the lead and held a 36-30 advantage into the fourth quarter. Valery Henry led NL with 17 points, while Olivia Yetter had nine, and both Raeann Mitchell and Gracie Thomas each scored seven points. The Eagles (9-5) led 9-2 after one quarter, then pushed the lead to 27-13 by halftime. They outscored the Bucks (2-13) by six in the second half. Cole Perry led the Eagles with 17 points, followed by Maverick Myers with 14 and Derek Ackerman with eight. Monroeville (7-3 FC) has a massive league game on Thursday at Western Reserve (9-6, 7-3). The winner is assured to stay at worst, one game off the pace of Plymouth (12-5, 8-2), which visits New London (9-6, 4-5) the same night. Kolk secured the first strike of the final frame, but then rolled nine-ball on his next turn to just miss the shot at a perfect 300 game. He ended up with a 288 and added a 200 for a 488 series. The old mark was held by Zach Thrash with a 278. Also for Norwalk, Eli Keefer rolled a 150-207—357 series. He was followed by Andrew Klett (158-148—306), Kevin Mills (152-138—290), Isaac Bohne (140), and Jacob Rockwell (107). "The team had an off-night, but Ashton carried the team on his back," NHS head coach Drew Burge said. "He was locked in straight from the start. After his first six strikes, I felt like he could do it. Ashton is that talented. "Once we got to the tenth frame and he got that first strike, everyone stopped to focus on his game," he added. "You can tell Ashton wanted that perfect game. But once we got to the second game, he settled back in and showed what kind of bowler he is. The team is super proud of him." Willard won the girls match, 1,924-1,281. Norwalk's Cassie Scott rolled a 169-121—290 to pace the Truckers. She was followed by Ary Winkler (111-110—221), Mae Fox (105-93—198), Gabbi Tomasulo (88-100—188), Alaya Winkler (100), and Ana McClimans (79). "It was a tough rematch for the girls tonight," Burge said. "They were consistent with their scores, and the goal is to just get a little better every game." JUNIOR HIGH NMS sweep Edison The Norwalk Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team ran its record to 11-1 overall with a 31-18 win over visiting Edison Monday night. Londynn Clifton led the Truckers with 12 points, while Stella Kipp had nine; Brynn Sellers scored six; and Lilli Kipp added four points. Meanwhile, the seventh-grade team improved to 12-0 with a 45-6 win over the Chargers behind Lexi Schmidt's 32 points. Kayla Naseman added 11 points, and Katherine Russ scored two points. The NMS girls close out the regular season Wednesday at Perkins. The eighth-grade boys team for the Truckers improved to 8-4 with a 50-18 win on Monday. Norwalk was led in scoring by Blake Muskovich with 15 points and Jacob Tyler with 14. Also scoring for NMS was Jose Benavides (9), Ryker Crumrine (4), Eric Araujo (2), Hayden Ruffing (2), Dhruvin Bhatt (2), and Mason Ragnoni (2). In the seventh-grade game, the Truckers improved to 12-0 with a 52-33 win over the Chargers. Maddox Gamble had 16 points and Benny Sellers scored 12 for the Truckers. Ethan Jones had seven points, followed by Wes Pitenger, Eli Schmidt, and Keaton Osheimer-Burke with five points each, and Lincoln King with two points. The NMS boys close our the regular season on Wednesday with home games against Perkins.
