Police badges honor nation

NORWALK — New badges worn by a local police department pay tribute to America's 250th anniversary this year. Norwalk police officers are wearing special badges reading "1776 — Semiquincentennial — 2026" and also featuring American flags and depictions of some of the nation's founders. Residents will notice slight differences in the metal coloring on badges worn by those with the ranks of officer, sergeant and captain. Chief Scott Dahlgren said his department recently received the badges, and officers are now wearing them. "It is an honor and privilege to serve the Norwalk community and to also do so during such a significant year for our country is special," Dahlgren said. "We decided to take the opportunity to honor America turning 250 by ordering these commemorative badges." Dahlgren thanked the AMVETS Post 1965 and the Norwalk Home Association for the donations that made the badge purchase possible. He also thanked Norwalk Mayor Dave Light and city safety service director Angie Smith for supporting the idea. "Thank you for helping us honor our past while we remain committed to serving and protecting our community into the future," a post on the department's Facebook page added. The 250th anniversary of the U.S. will be officially recognized on July 4, Independence Day, and is being celebrated with events across the nation. In Ohio, events are being promoted on america250-ohio.org, and one is happening locally soon. People can attend "Milan Goes to the Movies" from 7-9 p.m. on Feb. 11 at the Milan Township Hall, 24 Park St., Milan, which will recognize Thomas Edison and his role in early filmmaking. Admission is free, but attendees must RSVP at america250-ohio.org.
