Second quarter lifts Western past Eagles

MONROEVILLE — The Western Reserve girls basketball team outscored host Monroeville by seven points in the second quarter of Thursday's 49-39 win in Firelands Conference play on Steve Moore Court. Western (9-8, 6-5) got 16 points from Kara Woodruff in the win. Ava-Grace Thornburg added 13 points, followed by Layken Barnhart with eight points. Sophia Stieber scored a game-high 17 points for the Eagles (5-12, 3-8), while Taylor Scheid added nine points. Western entertains St. Paul on Saturday while the Eagles host New London. SWIMMING Norwalk, St. Paul finish regular season NORWALK — he Flyers entertained crosstown Norwalk and St. Mary Central Catholic in the final swim meet of the regular season on Jan. 28 at the Ernsthausen Rec Center pool. In the girls meet, the Flyers beat SMCC, 64-38, and topped the Truckers, 60-40. Norwalk then defeated SMCC, 57-30. In the boys meet, SMCC beat St. Paul (90-12) and Norwalk (59-45), while the Truckers beat the Flyers, 71-19. For St. Paul, the 200-yard medley relay of Elaina Coriell, Sarah Gocsik, Kennedie Frazee, and Jocelyn Welter won the event in 2:11.14. The same four won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:57.11. Individually for the Flyers, Coriell won both the 200 free (2:25.34) and the 100 backstroke (1:11.95). Frazee won both the 200 IM (2:35.74) and the 100 butterfly (1:14.27), and Welter won both the 50 free (27.9) and 100 free (1:03.76). "Overall, the swimmers did well despite the lack of practices due to the weather," St. Paul head coach Stacy Stoll said. "The next couple weeks will be focused on training for our sectional meet at Oak Harbor (on Feb. 14)." For Norwalk, the boys 200 medley of Canyon Craig, Anthony Hall, Lincoln Snyder, and Braydan Weinert took first in 1:55.17. Snyder, Alex Christophel, Weinert, and Craig won the 400 free relay in 3:52.56. Snyder won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.57, and Eli Loudy took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:16.14. For the girls, the 400 free relay of Saige Konik, Raena Ringenberg, Kylah Daniels, and Amara Rodriguez won in 4:29.95. "It was nice to compete at our home pool," NHS head coach Nikki Cross said. "We only saw a couple of new personal records set, with most of the team maintaining time. Our taper has begun, but the missed practices because of the weather has impacted the yardage that they are completing each week, creating a gap in routine. "We are hoping for the best over the next few weeks leading up to sectionals as we continue to drop yardage and increase intensity, heavily focusing on technique with strokes, starts and turns. Our goal is to see a lot of dropped time at the sectional meet." BOWLING Norwalk, Willard split NORWALK — The Truckers won the boys match over visiting Willard Thursday night, 2,113-1,899, at Kenilee Lanes. Isaac Bohne rillet a 154-212—366 series for Norwalk. He was followed by Ashton Kolk (190-171—361), Kevin Mills (190-169—359), and Andrew Klett (180-150—330). Jacob Rockwell added a 166 and Eli Keefer a 129. "Personally super proud of Isaac's effort tonight," NHS head coach Drew Burge said. "He had a slow start to the season but has been getting better over the last few weeks. I know the effort he puts in to work on his game, and we got a glimpse of what he is capable of tonight." Willard won the girls match, 1,727-1,387. Cassie Scott paced Norwalk with a 162-144—306, while Mae Fox had a 111-119—230. They were followed by Gabbi Tomasulo (127-91—218), Ana McClimans (103-85—188), Ary Winkler (102), and Alaya Winkler (101). "You can see the improvement in what they are doing," Burge said. "These girls always have a great attitude, and team spirit." Norwalk rematches with the Crimson Flashes next Tuesday at Dynasty Lanes in Willard. JUNIOR HIGH NMS teams face Clyde The Norwalk eighth-grade girls basketball team improved to 10-1 overall and 8-1 in the SBC Lake with Thursday's 47-35 win over Clyde. Stella Kipp scored 14 points for the Truckers, followed by Lilli Kipp with nine Londynn Clifton (8) Lexi Schmidt (8), and Brynn Sellers (6). The seventh-grade girls improved to 11-0 (9-0 SBC) with a 51-22 win over the Fliers. Lexi Schmidt had 18 points and Kayla Naseman scored 16 for the Truckers. Ella Ames and Grace Edmond had four points each, while Addie Vance had three, and Adelinn Sitterly and Katherine Russ each had two points. The girls host Edison on Monday. Meanwhile, the NMS boys eighth-grade team fell to the Fliers by a 54-44 score. Blake Muskovich had 21 points and Jacob Tyler scored 19. Jose Benavides and Bryson Reisner each added two points for the team (8-3, 4-3). The seventh-grade team topped the Fliers by a 34-25 score. Maddox Gamble had 12 points for the Truckers (11-0, 7-0), followed by Benny Sellers (9), Wes Pittenger (7), Eli Schmidt (4), and Lincoln King (2).
