Third quarter costly for Edison in road loss

CLYDE — Brian Heck had to joke with his team. After winter weather kept Clyde out of the gym and out of practice since a tough loss to Norwalk on Friday, the Fliers' coach went up and jokingly introduced himself to some of his players Wednesday. There were times the Fliers still weren't great offensively, but Clyde got after it defensively after not being in the gym for a few days. The Fliers limited Edison to just seven points the last 20 minutes of the game, topping the Chargers 41-28 in Sandusky Bay Conference crossover action. "I challenged them on that end," Heck said. "They responded. I'm proud of them. After a hard emotional loss at Norwalk where we had a chance for a signature win and having to come back after four days away, I'm just happy we played. It showed we haven't been in the gym." It looked like the two teams were in for a high-scoring game as Edison led 21-20 with 4:01 left in the second quarter. From there, Clyde (11-6) gave up just a last-second bucket to Edison's Brooke Dickman before halftime. In the third quarter, the Chargers (5-11) scored just three points. In the fourth quarter, Edison was limited to two made free throws. "Sometimes we got a little stagnant," Chargers coach Chelsey Meagrow said. "We did a little more standing and watching than looking at what got us to that point. Early, we did a lot of kicking and attacking and making sure we were in the right spot." Taylor Moore hit two 3-pointers to get Edison going early. Clyde responded and went up 12-9 only for Dickman to hit a 3 late in the quarter. In the second quarter, the Fliers went up 20-16 on a triple from Reese Daniel. But, Dickman responded with a 3-pointer and two free throws from Moore gave Edison a 21-20 lead. "I didn't know what to expect coming off of three days without having a basketball in our hands at practice," said Meagrow of a similar situation to Clyde. "We came out playing loose and making that extra pass. We were knocking down shots. "That was good to see after not having a basketball in our hands for a bit. We did a nice job of finding our shooters." From there, Taitum Jeffrey hit two free throws, Ember Andres drained a 3 and buckets from Lillian Greenslade and Annmarie Davis gave Clyde a 29-21 advantage. Dickman broke a 3:42 scoring drought to bring the Chargers within 29-23 at halftime. "There's a lot of good things and takeaways from this game," Meagrow said. "I think we did prove a lot of things about ourselves. I like that at the end of the season going into tournaments." Clyde won the third quarter 6-3, taking a 35-26 lead into the fourth quarter. Two buckets from Kelsey Ray pushed the Fliers' advantage to 39-26 with 4:46 left. Clyde used a 40-27 rebounding edge to help attempt 11 more shots than Edison. Ariah Farrar, who stands 5-foot-5 and is the smallest of the Fliers' five starters, paced Clyde with 13 rebounds. Moore finished with 11 points to lead Edison. Dickman added 10 points while Ella Booth had 12 rebounds. "Having them at the end of the season is good," Meagrow said. "It's going to be a physical, hard-fought game. You know that's what you're going to get when you get into tournament. It's about coming in and competing every possession. Playing hard is one thing. Competing is another."
