Tips to keep yourself safe from the cold weather

Amid dangerously low temperatures expected to continue into the coming week, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency is urging all Ohioans to take action and protect themselves, their households, and their vehicles. Forecasts show the state will experience dangerously low wind chills ranging from -10 to -25 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures can cause frostbite to set in quickly on exposed skin and are expected to remain through the weekend and continue into February, according to the National Weather Service. Preventative actions recommended to keep yourself and your home safe include: • Prevent frozen water pipes by running indoor faucets and leaving cabinets open to expose them to warm air. If possible, insulate and turn off valves to outdoor faucets. • Protect all pets and livestock by bringing them inside or ensuring that they have a warm, safe shelter to stay in, as well provide plenty of unfrozen water to drink. • Layer clothing in order to cover exposed skin and prevent frostbite. • Be aware of carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms such as headache, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea/vomiting, confusion and drowsiness. If you or anyone else is experiencing these symptoms, leave the building immediately and call 911. • Be aware of hypothermia symptoms such as shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech and sometimes drowsiness. Dress babies and children appropriately for the cold weather. • Be aware that frostbite symptoms include a loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in fingers, toes, ear tips, and the tip of the nose. • Actively check on your neighbors to make sure they have adequate heating and enough food and water to sustain the cold weather, especially if they are elderly or vulnerable individuals. • Prepare to travel safely by having a winter emergency kit inside your vehicle. The kit should include flashlights, extra batteries, a toolbox, snacks, bottled water, a car charger for the phone, extra jackets, gloves, hats, blankets and battery jumper cables.
