Monroeville tops Plymouth; NL extends FC streak

PLYMOUTH — The Monroeville girls basketball team broke open a tight game at halftime by outscoring host Plymouth by 14 points in the third quarter of a 42-27 win Saturday in a Firelands Conference game. Sophia Stieber scored a season-high 22 points for the Eagles, who improved to 5-11 overall and 3-7 in the FC. Taylor Scheid added nine points for Monroeville, which played without Payton Weilnau and Haylee Morman because of injuries. "Our girls played four strong quarters today," Monroeville head coach Ryan Bohn said. "It started with good team defense and limiting turnovers. I was really pleased with the balanced scoring that we had. "We played with great effort and showed significant growth." Rylie Edwards led Plymouth (2-14, 1-7) with 10 points, while Brooklyn Decapio added seven. Monroeville is scheduled to visit Bucyrus Wynford on Tuesday, while Plymouth hosts New London on Thursday. New London (14-3, 9-0) led 10-5 after one quarter, but used a 23-5 scoring edge in the second quarter to break the game open for a 33-10 halftime lead. Gracie Thomas paced NL with 18 points, followed by Olivia Yetter with 12 and Valery Henry with 11. The Wildcats are three wins away from at least a share of their third consecutive FC title. Christian 37 GREENWICH — The Trojans made it a home sweep of the weekend and pushed above the .500 mark with Saturday's non-league win over the Flames (7-6). Trailing 17-16 at halftime, the Trojans outscored the Flames 42-19 in the second half to win going away. Bryan Chaffee finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, nine steals and four assists for South Central. Wes June added 19 points and nine rebounds. South Central has a challenging weekend ahead when it hosts Western Reserve on Friday and entertains St. Mary Central Catholic (12-2) on Saturday. Plymouth 58, Lucas 31 LUCAS — The Big Red improved to 12-2 overall with Saturday's non-league win over the Cubs. Alone in first place in the Firelands Conference by three games, the Big Red are scheduled to face two of the second-place teams next week. Plymouth is scheduled to visit Western Reserve (7-6, 5-3) on Monday, weather permitting, then host Monroeville (7-5, 5-3) on Friday and Mansfield Christian on Saturday.
