Opening day hunt leads to charges

NORWALK — Five hunters were cited for multiple violations on the opening day of mourning dove season in Huron County, according to the Ohio Division of Wildlife. State Wildlife Officer Matt D. Smith, assigned to Huron County, observed the group hunting in a cut wheat field on Sept. 1 and conducted a compliance check after meeting them at their vehicles, according to a release from the state agency. During the inspection, Smith determined the group had exceeded the daily bag limit for mourning doves, hunted migratory birds over bait and used firearms capable of holding more than three shells, according to reports. Authorities said the group harvested 32 doves more than their combined daily legal limit. As a result, the hunters collectively paid $5,350 in restitution along with $1,420 in fines and court costs. The court imposed a total of 48 months of probation and 100 days of jail time, with the jail time being suspended. Each individual also had their hunting privileges revoked for one year. The illegally harvested doves were forfeited and donated to Back to the Wild, a wildlife rehabilitation facility. The Ohio Division of Wildlife reminded hunters that migratory bird regulations, including bag limits, firearm restrictions and baiting laws, are strictly enforced to ensure sustainable wildlife populations and fair hunting practices, according to the release.
