New Norwalk council member named

NORWALK — Norwalk's new city council member was named on Tuesday. The day prior, the Huron County Democratic Party appointed Ashleigh Couch to serve the remainder of the term for the city's first ward. That seat has been vacant since the sudden death of councilwoman Deb Lucal in December. Lucal, 69, served on the city council since 2012. Couch's term will run through the end of 2027, according to information from the Huron County Board of Elections. She may seek reelection in November 2027. "Through experience in many different sectors, I've developed a well-rounded perspective that will help me effectively serve Norwalk's constituents," Couch said. "I am very practiced in helping folks, frustrated when a system is not working, to get them the help they need. I care deeply about our community and am excited to support its continued success." Couch works at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, where she's been employed for about 13 years, according to a release from the county Democrats. She's lived in Norwalk most of her life and is a graduate of St. Paul High School. She met her husband of 17 years, Travis, while serving in the Ohio National Guard, the release states. They have a daughter, Taylor, who's currently serving in the Ohio National Guard and stationed in the Middle East, and two sons, River and Abel, both students at St. Paul. "I am impressed with her desire to serve — as she has her entire adult life," said Loretta Nichols, chairwoman of the Huron County Democratic Party. "I especially appreciate her willingness to listen to people with differing opinions, a hallmark of responsible public service." Couch's family has been serving the public in Huron County and the surrounding area for generations, the release states: • Her grandfather, Louis Frey, served as mayor of Norwalk for three stints between 1957 and 1999. • Her mother, Kathleen Butler, served on the board of Huron County Public Health from 2007-2024. • Her uncle, Tom Frey, served in the Norwalk Fire Department for decades, and her brother, Adam Butler, serves in the Sandusky Fire Department today.
