Western wins Mapleton Invite

ORANGE TWP. — The Western Reserve wrestling team was tops among not only four of the other seven Firelands Conference teams, but also the 16-team field on Jan. 17 at the Mapleton Dave Rohr Classic. The Roughriders scored 234.5 points to win the the tournament over New London (208.5). Plymouth (117), South Central (109.5), and Mapleton (84) were seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively. Seven area wrestlers won their respectively weight classes, including Western Reserve's Lucas Summerfield at 113 pounds; Anthony Lierenz at 126; Jaxson Davidson at 138; and Kohler Graves at 144. Summerfield won three matches, two by fall in 1:28 and 45 seconds, followed by a 12-4 major decision to win at 113. Lierenz was 3-0 with three pins (42 seconds, 2:37, 2:31) before a pin in 56 seconds in the finals. At 138, Davidson was 3-0 with pins in 11 seconds and 58 seconds, followed by a 20-2 technical fall. He scored a 14-6 major decision over Northwestern's Jack Morris in the final. Graves had four straight pins in 3:33, 56 seconds, 32 seconds, and 2:27 before winning a narrow 6-5 decision over Plymouth's Ben Trimmer in the finals. Placing second for Western was Colson Lutz at 106, Chance Warthling at 120, and Riley Lutz at 132. Landen Barnhart was third at 150 and Keegan Case was sixth at 285. New London had a trio of champions in the upper weights in Hunter Chandley (175), Oliver Harrison (190), and Keith Squire (215). Chandley went 5-0 at 175 with four pins in 1:04, 1:08, 34 seconds, 3:16, and a 5-4 decision over Wooster Triway's Austin Houser. Harrison pinned four straight opponents in 1:36, 51 seconds, 31 seconds, and 1:45. He beat Buckeye Central's Austin Bogner, 6-0, in the finals. Squire posted four pins in 40 seconds, 40 seconds, 32 seconds, ad 57 seconds to win at 215. Earning second for the Wildcats was Ethan Koch (165), while Jayden Brcken (157) was third. Tyler Kidd (113) and Tate Mitchell (132) each placed fourth, while Tristen Howell (126) and David Hostetler (150) each finished in fifth place for New London. Thomas Winegardner won the 120-pound weight class for the Big Red. He went 3-0 with a pair of pins in 17 seconds and 3:36, then won by default in his pool. He then had pins in 2:23 and 5:52 to claim the title. Also for Plymouth, Trimmer (144) was second, followed by Levi Foley (106) and Isaiah Miller (175) in third, and Parker Miller (165) in fourth. South Central had three finalists take second place in Wyatt Martin (113), Cole Frankart (150), and Greyson Fisher (157). Alex Hamons (215) was third and Jaxson Strickland (138) was sixth for the Trojans. Hamons also earned his 100th career win a the tournament. "This was a good tournament for this time of the year," South Central head coach Ken Johnson said. "We were tested at all levels of experience. Our young guys had an opportunity to see where their abilities are, and our veterans met up with some worthy opponents in the semis and the finals. "Each of them performed well all day and despite not coming up with victories in the finals, they wrestled well enough to keep their matches close and potentially win." Lepley places, earns 100th win ALLIANCE — Norwalk senior Gavin Lepley placed fifth for the Truckers at 165 pounds over Jan. 16-17 at the Alliance Top Gun tournament. Lepley, who went 5-2 at the tournament, also earned his 100th career victory and was the lone placer for Norwalk. Nico Helton (175) and Cooper Gee (285) each went 2-2 for the Truckers, who will send wrestlers to West Holmes and Western Reserve next weekend. Edison's Reer claims first OREGON — Edison freshman Cohen Reer went 5-0 to win the 106-pound weight class over Jan. 16-17 at the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay High School. Reer opened with three falls in 1:28, 2:25, and 1:16. He then pulled out a 12-9 win over Perrysburg's Collin Bagdonas in sudden victory to reach the finals, where he beat Archbold's Brenden Bosco, 17-1, via technical fall. Also for Edison, Mason Hermes went 4-1 at 126 to finish in second place. He had a fall in 1:15 before technical fall wins by scores of 21-1, 16-0, and 19-3 before falling to Perrysburg's Grey Burnett, 20-5. Joel Smith placed eighth at 285 for the Chargers, while Monroeville heavyweight Brycen Dunlap went 3-3 at the weight class to place sixth. SWIMMING SP girls second, NHS boys third DANBURY TWP. — The St. Paul girls scored 96 points to place second behind Tiffin Columbian, while the Norwalk boys totaled 79 points to finish third on Jan. 17 at the Danbury Craig Johnson Invitational. Elaina Coriell won the 100-yard backstroke for St. Paul in 1:07.72. She was also third in the 100 freestyle (1:03.36) and helped teammates Kennedie Frazee, Jocelyn Welter, and Sarah Gocsik win the 200 free relay in 1:54.99. Also for St. Paul, Welter was second in the 100 free (1:03.13) and third in the 50 free (27.91). Frazee was fourth in the 200 IM (2:36.26) and the 100 butterfly (1:13.32), while Gocsik was fourth in the 100 free (1:03.96). The 200 medley of Coriell, Gocsik, Frazee, and welter placed second in 2:10.21. Lincoln Snyder was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.92 for the Norwalk boys, while he helped Canyon Craig, Anthony Hall, and Brayden Weinert place second in the 200 medley relay in 1:56.86. Placing third was Craig in the 100 butterfly (1:01.21), while Eli Loudy was fourth in the 500 free in 6:16. Two relays for NHS also took fourth, including the 200 free of Snyder, Craig, Weinert, and Alex Christophel (1:44.52), along with the 400 free of Weinert, Christophel, Loudy, and Snyder in 4:00.55. Norwalk's relay team of sophomore Saige Konik and juniors Allison Rothhaar, Kylah Daniels, and Raena Ringenberg took second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.77). Earning second for the Norwalk girls was Saige Konik, Allison Rothhaar, Kylah Daniels, and Raena Ringenberg in the 200 free relay (2:02.77), and the 400 free quartet of Daniels, Rothhaar, Ringenberg, and Sofia Stahl in 4:38.05 in the 400 free. Konik, Daniels, Rothhaar, and Becca Farmer placed third in the 200 medley (2:19.04), while Ringenberg was fourth in the 200 free (2:32.17). BOWLING Norwalk teams in action NORWALK — The Truckers rallied from a 68-pin deficit Friday night to top Tiffin Columbian in an SBC Lake match on Jan. 16 at Kenilee Lanes. The Truckers won by 17 pins, 1,967-1,950. Ashton Kolk led the way with a 195-205—400 series, while Andrew Klett closely followed with a 192-192—384. Also for Norwalk, Eli Keefer rolled a 134-165—299, followed by Isaac Bohne (131-117—248), Kaiden Kimble (166), and Jacob Rockwell (118). "The boys settled in and battled back," NHS head coach Drew Burge said. "It was an absolute nail biter the entire match. Once we settled in after that first game, the boys made some good adjustments and made their marks." Columbian won the girls match, 1,695-1,140, as Cassie Scott paced the Truckers with a 161-135—296 series. Aryanna Winkler rolled a 114-81—195 series, followed by Mae Fox (88-69—157), Ana McClimans (91-55—146), and Alaya Winkler (73-68—141). "Just a tough match, and the girls had a hard time finding their marks, but we will just have to shake it off and keep working hard to get better," Burge said. "The goal is to keep our composure and improve every game. I'm confident we will get there." On Jan.18, the NHS boys competed in the 15th annual North Olmsted Eagle Challenge at The Rollhouse in Parma. The Truckers placed 20th among the 26 teams with scores of 578, 655, 703 and 613 in the four rounds. Those who competed for Norwalk included Kolk, Klett, Keefer, Jacob Rockwell, Ben Rockwell, and Kevin Mills. "The team had a good day,' Burge said. "We got off to a slow start. Some of that may have been nerves or just from a new experience. But the team rolled the ball better as they adjusted to the lanes and settled in. "They gave maximum effort in an environment composed of really tough teams," he added. "I felt like this atmosphere that they competed in offered a glimpse of the type of competition we will face when sectionals comes around. The team was not intimidated by the challenge. They tried their best and made adjustments."
