Prom night with a purpose

NORWALK — An unforgettable prom night experience, which organizers say is centered on God's love for people with special needs, will return to Norwalk in several weeks. Night to Shine returns on Friday, Feb. 13, and is slated to be hosted at Norwalk First United Methodist Church. Part of a worldwide celebration hosted at hundreds of locations on the same evening, Night to Shine welcomes guests ages 14 and older for a fully inclusive prom experience designed to make every attendee feel like royalty. Attendees will be treated to a wide range of beauty services, including hair, makeup and nail styling, a shoe-shine station, and a flower area offering corsages and boutonnieres. Each guest will also sit for a formal photograph and receive a framed copy to take home at the end of the evening. The event will feature games, a photo booth, and a catered dinner shared by guests and their volunteer buddies. A red-carpet entrance will welcome attendees into the sanctuary, where a crowd of cheering "paparazzi" will celebrate their arrival before the dance begins. A respite area will be available for family members and caregivers, while a sensory-friendly area sponsored by Artists' Open Studio will provide a calming space for guests who need it. The evening will conclude with a special video message from former professional athlete Tim Tebow, followed by the crowning of every participant as King or Queen of the prom with a crown or tiara.
