Howell sets new wins record at NL

NEW LONDON — Head coach Tom Howell reached a milestone at his alma mater as the New London boys basketball team edged past rival South Central, 56-52, for a Firelands Conference win Friday night. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 6-4 overall and 2-4 in the FC. The win also was No. 195 at New London for Howell, eclipsing his former head coach, the late Tom Eibel (1985-96), for most wins in program history. In his 17th season, Howell has guided the 'Cats to a pair of FC titles, five sectional championships, and one district title. In Friday's win, New London had its five starters in double-figures, led by Henry Thomas with 12 points and Jarrett Mencel with 11. The trio of Jackson Mitchell, Grady Heileman, and Jaxson Schaffer each added 10 points. For South Central (6-5, 2-4), Tanner Pac scored 14 points and Wes June had 11, followed by Troy Ayers with nine. The Eagles are 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the FC, one game behind league-leading Plymouth (8-2, 6-0). Maverick Myers led Monroeville with 21 points, followed by Cole Perry with 13 and Colton Koch with 11. Monroeville entertains state-ranked Margaretta (11-1) Saturday night in non-league play. For Western (6-4, 4-2), Chase Hipp had a big double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds. Hayden Dobias added eight points and four rebounds, while Caleb Pausch had three points, six rebounds, and five assists. The Roughriders were slated to host Huron (4-7) Saturday night.
