Vermilion stops St. Paul win streak

NORWALK — The St. Paul girls basketball team was steadily outscored over four quarters of Wednesday's non-league loss to visiting Vermilion. The Flyers saw their three-game win streak end and fell to 7-6 with the loss. They trailed the Div. IV Sailors (7-7) after one quarter, 18-11, then 30-19 at halftime. The Sailors then outscored St. Paul 26-19 in the second half. Morgan Endsley led the Flyers with nine points, followed by Raeleigh Friend and Ella Kalizewski with eight points each. Aubrie Bogard added seven, and Deanna Vazquez scored six points. SWIMMING St. Paul, Margaretta split NORWALK — The Flyers had three individuals win multiple events to beat Margaretta, 92-72, in a girls swim meet Wednesday at the Ernsthausen Rec Center pool. Elaina Coriell won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.2 and the 200 freestyle in 2:26.09, while Kennadie Frazee won the 100 fly (1:13.96) and the 200 IM (2:35.09). Also winning twice was Jocelyn Welter in the 50 free (28.32) and the 100 free (1;04.57). Also for St. Paul, Sarah Gocsik won the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.27. The 200 medley relay of Coriell, Gocsik, Frazee, and Welter won in 2:11.36. The same four also won the 400 free relay in 4:24.43. Margaretta won the boys meet, 117-30, as St. Paul's Wyatt Shumway won the 200 free in 2:51.15. BOYS BASKETBALL SMCC 57, New London 56 NEW LONDON — The Wildcats (5-4) trailed by six points at halftime, then saw a second-half rally come up a point short in Tuesday's non-league loss to the visiting Panthers (8-0). Grady Heileman score 19 for New London, followed by Henry Thomas with 18, and Jaxson Schaffer with 11. New London (2-3 FC) will look to stop a three-game slide when it hosts South Central (6-4, 2-3) Friday night in Firelands Conference play. ST. JUNIOR HIGH NMS teams defeat Perkins The Norwalk Middle School basketball teams defeated Perkins on the road and at home Wednesday night. The NMS boys traveled to Perkins, and the eighth-grade team pulled out a thrilling 37-33 win. Perkins led by four points wit just over a minute to play before Norwalk rallied, led by a 3-pointer from Jacob Tyler late. Blake Muskovich had 26 points for Norwalk, while Tyler had nine and Ryker Crumrine added two points. Meanwhile, the seventh-grade team improved to 7-0 with a 47-36 win after a 15-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter allowed them to take control. Maddox Gamble led the team with 13 points. Ethan Jones scored 12 points on four 3s, while Benny Sellers also scored 10 points. Also for the team, Eli Schmidt scored eight points and Lincoln King added four. Zane Scheid and Keaton Ostheimer-Burke contributed defensively off the bench in the win. The Truckers will host Sandusky at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the NMS gym. The eighth-grade NMS girls team cruised to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the SBC Lake with a 48-20 win over the Pirates. Brynn Sellers and Stella Kipp each paced the team with 15 points each, followed by Lilli Kipp with nine points. Londynn Clifton scored five points, while Krista Bergman and Kayla Naseman each scored two points. In the seventh-grade girls game, the Truckers also improved to 7-0 and 4-0 with a 47-21 win over the Pirates. Lexi Schmidt scored 23 points and Naseman had 17 points. Both teams travel to Sandusky on Monday. S.C. eighth-graders win NORWALK — The Trojans claimed a 38-26 win over host St. Paul in FC eighth-grade boys basketball on Wednesday. Zach Fiddler was the top scorer with 13 points, followed by Isaac Lamoreaux with nine. Rounding out the South Central scoring was Caden Gahring (6), Case Codeluppi (5), Max Bays (2), Maverick Olney (2), and Cohen Fishbaugh (1). For the St. Paul, Clay Steiber had 13 points, Gracin Bockert (5), Eli Schwann (4), Santiago Vasquez (2), Blake Van Dresser, and Gabe Bleile (1) rounded out the scoring. St. Paul won the seventh-grade game, 30-23, behind 15 points from Troy Bogard. He was followed by Henry Pertner with five points; Weston Davis with four; and Chase Mutchler TJ McBride, and Preston Freed with two points each.
