Fundraiser promotes swimming safety

NORWALK — A Norwalk native is hosting a program to help children learn to swim. Cassie Link, an occupational therapist, founded the OTTERS program — short for Occupational Therapy Teaching, Engaging and Regulating through Swimming. Link is hosting an OTTERS FUNdraiser at the Norwalk Reservoir Clubhouse, 205 S. Old State Road, Norwalk, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. In addition to swim instruction, the event also features lunch and other activities. "Accidental drownings account for 91% of deaths related to wandering for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder ages 14 years and younger," Link said. "This program teaches safety awareness, engages brain/body connections, and regulates sensory/behavioral systems through aquatic-based therapy services to advance basic functional skills and promote swimming skills necessary for safety in and around the water." Funds generated from ticket sales will go toward per-hour expenses and any necessary equipment purchases.
