Gross wins 100th match, title at Coshocton

COSHOCTON — Two-time state qualifier and All-Ohioan Rafael Gross earned his 100th career win on Saturday at the two-day Coshocton Classic. A junior at St. Paul, Gross went 5-0 in the 165-pound weight class to win the bracket and reach the career milestone. In two-plus seasons, Gross is 102-18 for his career. At the 33-team tournament, Gross … opened with a 16-0 technical fall win before a pin in 52 seconds and 45 seconds on Friday. He needed 2:53 for a pin in the semifinals, then Gross cored a 5-3 win over Cambridge's Marshall Laishley in the finals. Also for the Flyers, junior Zeke Dvorak made the finals at 157 to take second place. He also opened with a 19-3 technical fall, then Dvorak had pins in 1:08, 4:27 and 1:05 before a 14-5 major decision win in the semifinals. Facing Cambridge's Gavin Resor, Dvorak fell in the finals by a 7-3 score. Sophomore Vinny Caizzo (120) went 4-1 f)or St. Paul to place fifth, while juniors Landon Kennebeck (175) and Camden Coetzee (215) each went 3-2 to place seventh. St. Paul will head to the Medina Invitational on Dec. 29-30. Chandley MVP at Bellevue BELLEVUE — New London senior Hunter Chandley went 5-0 at 175 and earned tournament MVP honors Saturday at the Bob Bailey pool tournament. Chandley needed just 3:30 to pin three opponents before a 5-1 win over Bellevue's Gavin Saleski to reach the finals, where he scored a 13-5 major decision over Amherst's Isaac Vasquez. Also for New London, Jayden Bracken (157), Ethan Koch (165), and Keith Squire (215) each placed second. Bracken had three straight pins in 1:35, 2:33, and 3:25 before falling by technical fall to Bellevue's Kolt Lewis in the final. Koch had two straight wins by technical fall with scores of 20-5 and 17-1 before scoring pins in 2:59 and 42 seconds. He was pinned in three minutes by Bellevue's Bill Sberna in the final. Squire had four straight pins in 45 seconds, 58 seconds, 44 seconds and 1:21 before he was pinned by Bellevue's Tatum Gore in 2:57. David Hostetler was fourth at 150 and Steven Hostetler was sixth at 215 for NL, which placed sixth in the 12-team standings. Western Reserve had three runner-ups at the tournament in Colton Lutz (106), Anthony Lierenz (132) and Jaxson Davidson (144). Lucas Summerfield (120) also place third for the Roughriders. Lutz had three pins in 36 seconds, 2:51 and 5:37 along with a 17-2 technical fall before falling to Copley's Max Holley, 21-2, in the finals. Lierenz had two pins in 39 seconds and 53 seconds along with a 16-8 major decision before falling 14-4 in the finals to Copley's Jayden Mallard. At 144, Davidson opened with a 16-7 major, followed by pins in 54 seconds, 1:30, and 2:27. He was edged in the finals, 6-4, against Bellevue's Nolan Hartman. The Wildcats are idle until the Plymouth Invite on Jan. 3. The 'Riders are in the Brookside Invitational on Tuesday. Martin wins title at Rogers TOLEDO — South Central's 113-pound took first place on Saturday at the Ray Steely Rogers Invitational. Martin won five matches to win the bracket, starting with a 21-4 technical fall win in the first round. He followed with pins in 31 seconds, one minute, and 56 seconds before a 22-7 technical fall win over Toledo Central Catholic's Brendan Zapadka in the finals. Also for the Trojans, Jaxson Strickland placed third at 138 after going 3-2. Greyson Fisher was fourth at 157, followed by Corbin Barber (150) in fifth, Alex Hamons (215) in sixth, and Padan Arnold (165) in eighth. The Trojans will join Western Reserve at the Brookside Invitational on Tuesday.
