Edison's Reer runner-up at Ironman

CUYAHOGA FALLS — Edison freshman Cohen Reer reached the finals at 106 pounds over the weekend at the 31st annual Ironman wrestling tournament held at Walsh Jesuit High School. The renowned event drew wrestlers from 129 different high schools from 21 different states. Seeded No. 4 at the weight, Reer opened with a 15-0 technical fall win over Ethan Cotchen of Bishop McCort (Johnstown, Pa.), followed by a 10-2 major decision over Alex Hall of St. Pius X (Kansas City, Mo.). In the quarterfinals, Reer rallied late for a 10-9 win over Niko Odiotti of Loyola Academy (Wilmette, Ill.). In the semis, he claimed a 4-1 decision over Jack Anello of Blair Academy (Blairstown, Twp., NJ). Reer faced No. 2 seed Connor Maddox of Westfield High School (Westfield, Ind.) for first place. The two wrestlers were scoreless after one period, then Reer earned an escape point and managed a three-point takedown for a 4-0 lead. However, Maddox earned a reversal, countered by Reer with an escape point for a 5-2 lead. Reer was then awarded a takedown just before the end of the second period, but the call was reversed to keep the score at 5-2. Maddox earned an escape to begin the period, then scored a takedown for a 6-5 lead. Reer was able to get free for an escape point and a 6-6 tie to force overtime. It didn't take long in the OT session for Maddox to score a takedown in 10 seconds for a 9-6 victory. Reer also won the host Edison Invitational on Dec. 6. Edison, Monroeville in Roughneck Duals FINDLAY — The Chargers and Eagles competed at the annual Roughneck Duals held at the University of Findlay on Dec. 13 Edison won two of its dual matches against Defiance Ayersville (45-30) and against the Eagles (66-6). Among the top performers for the Chargers included Brayden Barker (113) and Bentley Illuzzi (190), who each went 8-2 in 10 matches over the two days. Also for Edison, AJ Crabtree was 6-4 at 120 and Kamden Horvath was 5-4 at 138. For Monroeville, standout state placer Brycen Dunlap 9-0 at 285 with six pins in 25 seconds, 1:35, 1:05, 51 seconds, 1:16, and 1:22, respectively. Dunlap also had two forfeits, and a 2-0 decision over Logan Elm's Conner Green. Norwalk seventh at Highland MARENGO — The Truckers scored 119 points at the Highland Jeremy Ammons Kilted Classic on Dec. 13. Norwalk was seventh among 19 teams and were paced by Nico Helton, who won his weight class at 175. Helton started his tournament with three straight pins in 3:29, 39 seconds, and 21 seconds. Leading 10-1 in the semifinals, he then pinned his opponent in 3:55. In the finals, Helton won a 19-4 technical fall over Perkins' Cooper Cisco. Also for the Truckers, Cooper Gee was second at 285. He also started his tournament with three pins in 1:20, 52 seconds, and 23 seconds, respectively. After advancing to the final by medical forfeit, Gee was down 9-5 when he fell to Medina's Cliff Nicholson by fall in 5:24. Gavin Lepley placed fourth at 165, followed by Ayden Hudson Brown (157) and Alydynn Metzger (132) in sixth, and Victor Negrete (150) in eighth. Willard also competed at the tournament and had four placers, led by Jose Figueroa (106) and Luke Slone (138). Figueroa had a pair of technical fall wins by scores of 17-1 and 19-4 around a pin in 24 seconds before outlasting an opponent with a 17-14 decision. He lost in the final, 7-4, to Ryan Noble from Watkins Memorial. Slone won with a pin in 34 seconds and 2:51, followed by a major decision win (14-5). He used a 6-0 decision to reach the finals, where he fell to Ontario's Tyler Turnbaugh by a 7-3 decision. Also for the Flashes, Logan Williams (157) was fourth and Jackson Steinmetz (132) was seventh. NL third at Hillsdale JEROMESVILLE — The Wildcats placed third overall behind Wooster and Coshocton at the Hillsdale Austin Smiley tournament on Dec. 13. New London finished with three individual champions in Jayden Bracken (157), Hunter Chandley (175), and Oliver Harrison (190). Chandley went 6-0 on the day and pinned all six opponents at 175. He needed 30 seconds, 1:29, 40 seconds, 33 seconds, 4:40, and 1:12 to top the weight. Harrison did the same at 190, pinning five opponents in 2:42, 32 seconds, 1:16, 39 seconds, and 41 seconds, respectively. Bracken went 4-1 at his weight, scoring four pins in times of five seconds, 38 seconds, 36 seconds, and 3:07. Also for New London, Keith Squire was second at 215. He pinned three opponents in 48 seconds, 2:38, and 1:34. He was pinned in the finals by Coshocton's Ethan Larrison in 3:24. Tate Mitchell (132) and David Hostetler (157) each placed third for NL, while Tyler Kidd (113) and Ethan Koch (165) each finished fourth. Plymouth eighth at Clear Fork BELLVILLE — The Big Red had five placers to score enough points for eighth place among 15 teams at the Clear Fork Invitational on Dec. 13. Ben Trimmer paced Plymouth by reaching the finals at 144. He posted a 15-0 technical fall and a pin in 1:57 to each the semifinals, where he won 5-3 before falling 17-1 to Clear Fork's Sloan McGhee. Also for Plymouth, Isaiah Miller (175) was third, followed by Levi Foley (106) in fourth, Thomas Winegardner (120) in fifth, and Cortez Hernandez (138) in sixth. For South Central, Wyatt Martin reached the finals at 113, as did Greyson Fisher at 157. Martin had three pins in his pool rounds in 52 seconds, 20 seconds, and 4:15. He scored a 12-5 decision in the semifinals before falling 19-2 to Clear Fork's Caleb Snyder. Fisher had a pair of technical falls by scores of 17-2 and 19-4, then two pins in 3:05 and 1:05 to advance to the finals, where he lost 10-0 to Vermilion's Aiden Keyser. "This was a strong tournament with some very good competition," South Central head coach Ken Johnson said. "We knew going in that several of our guys were going to be tested. They were, and despite not walking away with championships or other placement medals, all our athletes did well. "Both Greyson and Wyatt in the finals performed well, each being beaten by points. We know we have things to continue to work on. With some minor adjustments we hope to earn more championship and placement medals in the future." GIRLS Norwalk fourth at Northwestern WEST SALEM — The NHS girls team opened its wrestling season on Sunday at the Northwestern Husky Invitational. The Truckers scored 101.5 points to finish fourth behind host Northwestern, Tiffin Columbian, and Cloverleaf. Norwalk had six placers for the day, led by junior Allison Dennis, who won the 190-pound weight class. Dennis had a pair of pins in 55 seconds and 1:44, respectively. Olivia Ysaguirre was second at 120, Madison Ganzhorn took third at 155, while Savannah Buchanan (135) and Jimena Omelas (235) each placed fourth, and Valeria Diaz (125) was sixth. For New London, Ava Downs had two pins in 1:08 and 39 seconds to win the 100-pound weight class. Placing third was Amelia Mitchell (140) and Gwyneth Voltz (235), while Hallie Pylant (145) was fifth, and Alexis Randolph (120) was seventh.
