Kids celebrate Thanksgiving

Editor's note: Parcher is a teacher at the Norwalk-based Christian Day Nursery School. On Thursday, Nov. 13, we had two guest presenters come to our school. We also had a canned food drive and built towers. Our last activity was creating our own Thanksgiving feast. Joan Pliler, from Norwalk, came in and helped the children in Pre-Kindergarten class learn how to make corn husk dolls. She told the students about the legend behind the corn husk dolls. "The Spirit of Corn" created dolls with faces to entertain children. One doll became vain after seeing her reflection. The Great Spirit then took her face away as a punishment and from that day on, the dolls do not have faces. This reminds us to avoid vanity and to focus on helping others. The students then brought in canned goods from Tuesday, Nov. 18 through Tuesday, Nov. 25 to refill the Blessing Box located in the parking lot of St. Peter Lutheran Church. The students heard the story about "The Tower of Babel" during Temple Talk. The students built their own tower out of cups and then built their Tower of Food from the cans they brought from home. Izzy Didion, from Bellevue, came in and presented his collection of native American artifacts and his collection of arrowheads to the 4-year-old classes. Native American arrowheads are interesting due to their practical use as essential tools for survival. It took incredible skill and artistry involved in making this creation. Arrowheads connect us to the past through these handcrafted artifacts. On Tuesday, Nov. 25 the students created their own Thanksgiving Feast. Three-year-old students made cornbread, four-year-olds made stone soup and the five-year-olds made butter. During snack time the students had their feast.
